I am hunting the LBJ Grasslands and am going to use a shot gun and wanted to know if it was better to use buckshot or buy a rifled barrel for my shot gun and use slugs?

I tend to go with more precision when shooting things I want to eat, so I would say slugs, however they will take more money to get a barel, and the slugs them selves are expensive.

Just use rifled slugs in your smooth bore, still more range that buckshot that way.

Use Triball buckshot from Dixie Slugs. The 3 .62 caliber balls pattern tight and hit like a slug. They are hard to beat.

Buck shot is even iffy at 40yds; if you have slugs with a good barrel you can easily reach out to 100yds.

Buckshot....your SOL

Slugs are allowed. it is Rifle, shotgun, or muzzle loader. Its up to you if you want slugs or buckshot out of a shotgun.

PS for the original poster...I would select a slug over buckshot any day.

Sabot slugs for shotguns are more accurate than rifled slugs. Instead of the cost of buying a rifled barrel, you can buy a rifled choke for your smoothbore, as long as your gun uses a popular brand choke.

My 20 gauge shotgun (Savage 220F with Leupold 3x9) is accurate to about 200 yards but it has a rifled barrel.

Rifle, muzzleloader, and shotgun ONLY DO NOT TAKE A RIFLE TO GRASSLANDS. One of the forestry officers there last year was hellbent on getting my stuff taken upon seeing me with my 270 and told me that someone was almost killed while riding out there by a deer hunter. Said the TPWD decided to put a stop by banning rifle hunting out there.

Find the Federal LE132 Buckshot with Flite Control wad. You will be amazed how this round behaves out to long distances with 00 buckshot. It mimics slugs out farther than standard buckshot. you will not be disappointed.
