 Got First Black Bear on Saturday (Arkansas)

It finally happened. I've hunted Oklahoma and Arkansas hard for bear and have never even seen one. On Friday I went back up to Mena, Arkansas for the archery opener. Weather was rainy all day on Saturday but the bear didn't care. I saw three small bears in the morning (which was awesome) but didn't have an ethical shot opportunity at any of them. This bear came in at 5:45 PM Saturday evening and smoked him (double lunged w/ a G5 montec). He ran up the tree next to the bait site to about 15 feet and crashed out dead. What a relief to not have to track a bear through the mountains at night. Taxidermist said he was 1.5 years old (won't know until we get the tooth back) and 110 lbs. Decent head for a young bear but pretty thin. Don't let this young one fool you, this same county (Polk) produced multiple 500+ lbs plus bears last year. Would you consider him a trophy? Probably not, but I sure as heck do! I can't wait for September 15, 2013 to look for his grand daddy!

Congratulations! Thanks for the kind words. I should clarify that this bear was taken w/ my ghost 400 (off hand) at 26 yards from a ladder stand. Besides the hide or possible mounting it, do you eat it? Just dropped him off at the proccessor, he should be pretty tasty. He will be processed much like a deer (butterflied backstraps, chili meat, jerky, etc...)

There are quite a few bears around there. My brother has been run out of the woods during turkey season by bears.

We are overrun on our lease near Snow Oklahoma, They are on all feeders (10) and destroyed two of them this past week. I have never considered hunting them, but if they continue to be a nuisance I will reconsider.
