So we all know most hunters find it unethical to shoot a dove out of a tree with a gun but what about off the backyard fence with a bow?

Man you got it all mixed up. I'll swat a dove out of a tree but I'm pretty solid with my bow and would not do that. Well maybe....

Unless you are really good and will only get a head shot, I think that an arrow will pretty much mess up the meat.

Start practicing on grackles and work your way up when you get better..........or just use a gun.

If ethics allows it...this seems like a job for a pellet gun and a head shot.

I usually shoot the branch of the tree first, and then shoot the bird with my second shot in the air.

Shouldn't you wait till 2 dove are side by side before you shoot them in a tree?

Ill just put this out there. I shot a dove at 20 yards with my bow today. He was sitting on my fence nothing for over 300 yds behind my house so I figured why not. Hit him in the head/neck breasted him and added him to my dove kabob. Don't like the idea of shooting dove in a tree but with a bow at 20 yds he has a fair chance or did.

Sappertan, pick up a couple bird points with the wire loops. Should be easier to connect.

And of course it's legal. Bows and crossbows are both listed in the waterfowl digest as lawful. Allowing crossbows is fairly new for Texas, so you will still find old references in some pre 2009 publications stating crossbows are not legal for migratory game.

I have taken a Dove with a bow long ago. I was target shooting, had a dove land between me and the target, and it was during dove season. I had a bird point with the four big wire loops given to me by a friend. It was in my arrow box on the ground at my feet. I quickly screwed the point on an arrow and took my shot. I aimed above the bird assuming it would jump the string and it did. I connected with a poooof of feathers. Though it pretty much stripped the bird, the breast was intact. I was alone. One of those times you look around and wish there had been someone else there to see it.

I have also bowhunted ducks long ago with my then young nephew (now 40) stalking creek bends with flu flu arrows. We never connected, but it was fun trying.

It's too much work to shoot a dove and then go find the arrow. I just wanted to see if I could do it.

Be sure you have the landowner's permission if you do not own the land beyond your property where the projectile has broke the properties edge, regardless if no one lives or has a dwelling on it.

Best used on a flu flu arrow, but even on a regular arrow it will still slow your arrow down faster. Also the design will keep it from burying in the ground/grass so it can be easy to find. We shot them over shallow water with wood shafted arrows and I don't think we ever lost one. Also called a "snaro" point.
