Fine grip sand paper, clean then Krylon works pretty well.

Scotchbrite works better, is the receiver aluminum or steel?
Search the web, there are tons of tutorials on painting/ camoing shotguns out there with step by step pictures.

You DO NOT have to sand or otherwise scratch the surface of th metal!
Clean all of the gun oil and human oil off of the steel with Acetone. Mask off moving parts, spray with Krylon brand camo. Krylon dries the fastest so you can layer the paint without waiting hours or days.
There are many techniques for applying camo. Pick the one you like.

Personally I would not suggest krylon, I would not sand the metal also some super fine steel wool if you absolutely must, make sure the metal is free of all oils before painting also. I would strongly suggest using Duracoat though it will give you much better results that will last.

The krylon will last a while, All my guns get kryloned, and I do not sand on the gun. It will chip, but a quick spray and its gone.

Instead of Bubba-ing up your nice shotgun, why not just buy a few rolls of "bow tape", the camo tape that bow-hunters use.
I do that with some of my stainless-steel rifles, when I want a little less glitz in the field.
After the hunt you can remove the tape - and your gun doesn't look like 'Bubba" has gotten hold of it.
Because he hasn't.

Because tape gets nasty, frays and will get sticky with humidity.

Sand the metal with a maroon scotch brite pad. This is a must if you want any kind of adhesion. If the paint your using doesnt fill the surface scratches from scotch brite pads it is to thin anyway. After sanding wipe it clean with thinner or alcohol. Once its clean dont touch the surface your painting with bare hands. Then you can prime it or just paint it if using a paint that doesnt require priming. Pm me if you have any questions and ill be happy to help.
