Found this little fella while cleaning out the cattle guard yesterday morning. What is a Timber Rattler doing in West Texas? Yall need to keep them in the eastern 1/3 of the state where they belong; we have enough of our own over here as it is.

Nice find. I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Pretty sure what you found is a crotalus molossus molossus, also known as a Black-tailed Rattlesnake. I know it's not a Timber/Canebrake Rattlesnake.

Pretty sure it's a Timber. I may be wrong though - it's happened once before.

Quote:
TPWD = They have a heavy, light yellow, gray or greenish-white body with a rust-colored strip along the length of their bac and a black tail is tipped with rattles. Timber rattlesnakes have yellow eyes with elliptical or cat-like pupils. Twenty to 29 dark, V-shaped crossbars with jagged edges form a distinctive pattern across their back.

I know they are protected as Threatened.

Who said I killed it?

Definitely not a timber rattlesnake, it's a blacktail, AKA Mexican blacktail (very distinct head markings). I caught one near Kerrville years ago, very pretty snake. That's a large one as well.

Blacktail. But still fairly rare find.

Maybe a rock mottled rattler. Hey Desert hunter, Do you know Kenny Fred Stafford? He owns the deer processing place in Sanderson.

That's awesome. Somehow I have only seen one rattlesnake in my entire life and it was just a baby. I go out looking for them during the summer, never have any luck.

No, I don't know him. I process all my own deer and send customers deer up to Jack Graves (J's) in San Angelo or Nicholson's in Mertzon if they want us to handle it.

Not a Timber Rattler....Adult timber rattlesnakes reach a length of 36 to 40 inches (91 to 101 cm), and weigh 1.3 to 2 pounds (0.58 to 0.9 kg). They have a heavy, light yellow, gray or greenish-white body with a rust-colored strip along the length of their bac and a black tail is tipped with rattles. Timber rattlesnakes have yellow eyes with elliptical or cat-like pupils. Twenty to 29 dark, V-shaped crossbars with jagged edges form a distinctive pattern across their back.

Lastly, I do not think he killed him....no need to?!
