What draw weight is the minimum for pig hunting? And do you like to use fixed or mechanical heads?

A good friend of mine gets pass-thru with 55# draw (and he can hold drawn without shaking for a good long while).

There is no minimum DW for pigs, and if you are asking what minimum you should use, the best advice I can give you is to go to a local pro shop and meet with a professional. No, the professionals are not at the Box Stores! Get set-up properly and you will have a lot of fun sticking pigs.

Your question stirs more questions unfortunately. What are you able to comfortably pull, and with your draw length what kind of speed are you getting? What kind and weight arrows are you shooting? What broadhead weight and style are you using? What is your realistic range expectations on making a shot?

As has been said, no LEGAL minimum. With the right set up, you would be surprised what a 35lb draw weight could take care of when driving a well balanced arrow tipped with something of the likes of a magnus stinger at ranges inside 25 yards.

I hunt with spitfire broadheads and my pull right now is 55#. Sounds like I will be ok with my setup.

Do yourself a favor. Beef up your arrow weight and use a 2 blade cut on contact for hogs.

You are underestimating the mud, tuff skin and fat. I am not saying your current set up won't put it down what I am saying is you are riding the edge with a 55# bow and a mechanical bh.

Good luck and happy tracking.

I would have to disagree with above post somewhat. Granted, a cut on contact is best, but most hogs people are shooting are probably 150 pounds or less. And as far as draw weight, I know of people killing pigs with pass thrus using a 40-45 pound recurve.

Shot placement is the key. If you use your current bow set-up with a good arrow and cut on contact BH, you can or should get a pass thru on most pigs you encounter. Now with that said, if you hit one in the shoulder plate, i.e., bad shot placement, you may not get a pass thru.

I wouldn't shoot expandables if you are shooting less than 60 lbs. on a hog. Muzzy and slick tricks are probably the best fixed blades.

If you can pull it back then send it thru him. No need to be technical bout it. Broad heads shoot good ones cause a good shot with a so so broad head is better than a bad shot with a good one any day.

The video posted, looks like the hog has been dead a while, RM looks to have set in. Also, aiming for the shoulder on a big hog, heck you can be shooting as many pounds as you want with that cheap broadhead, and you get the same results. The pics below are of a pig I shot, close to 300 pounds, shooting Mathews set at 63 pounds, CX 350 Bluestreak, Magnus 2 blade 100 grains. Shot was at 18 yards, buried the fletching with blade sticking out the other side. Shot was right behind the shoulder and pig went less than 50 yards.

Shot placement, sharp broadheads....
