I still hunt with an early 90s Hoyt Super Slam Supreme. One owner bow. Purposely ordered with 65% let off to comply with oklahoma regs at the time and with round wheels to cut back on noise. I have been bowhunting 30+ years and have had no reason to upgrade. Though the current bowhunting generation leans to the fast and light arrow concept, the old slow and heavy arrow concept killed deer then and still does now. I will upgrade one of these days, but when most of your bowhunting only involves sending an arrow down from above at less than 30 yards, most every functional bow on the market new or used can make that shot.

I got a Matthews FX in '99 I think it was and have killed critters with it every year since that first season and see no reason to change but here's my even older bow story. Despite what the solo cam speed bow carbon arrow guys think an alumanium arrow going 230 fps will still kill deer. Some where in the last ten years Matthews has convinced archers that deer have evolved into mythical creatures that can only be killed with super fast carbon arrows. Last week I found a Hoyt Raider in the trash I'm thinking it's mid to late 80s. It has one brass pin with finger nail polish on the end so you can see it, two tiny wheels, metal cables and weighs about a ton. I vowed to kill something with this bow mostly just to spite my buddies that have to buy new every year cause some how they fell for that crap that matthews is talking, so the bet is on. I dig through my stacks of arrows come up with some 2216s that shoot well, hooked on some Thunder Heads and shot a little bare finger. Sighted my one pin in at 20 and off I went. Got in the blind at 6:30 at 7:30 a boar about 165 comes in 24 yards and turns broadside. I draw and hold the 0% let off for what seemed like an hour but was just seconds, settle my pin behind the elbow joint and turn it lose. You know how the arrow looks like slow mo and you already know the out come while the arrow is in flight? Well when I seen the arch I knew I had trouble cause the extra four yards was several inches of drop more than my regular bow and the shot was just low but east and west was on. The pig done a back flip puffed up like a horned toad and grunted at me for a minute and walked away. I had forgotten how slow these bows are and should have held mid body but to be so close gave me confidence that after only ten practice shots with this bow I will shed blood in short order with the Raider, nick named Raider The Penetrator cause I just wanted to talk some smack to the boys. Ten minutes later a bigger boar comes in walks up smells my arrow which is laying fifteen yards past the feeder and I'm sure was covered in sweat and OFF spray and he bugged out. About thirty turkeys came in a few minutes later and ate all my corn and left. Fifteen minutes before dark another boar comes in but don't stick around long with nothing to eat but I was satisfied that me and Raider will be taking hero shots together this season. You don't need speed and $1000 bows to kill animals, it doesn't hurt but it's fun to take out $20 worth of equipment and know that it kills just as dead as the speed boys bows do. That's my old bow story but stay tuned for more adventures of me and Raider we will get it done.

I shoot a 2003 AR(Archery Research). I guess 8-9yrs would be considered pretty old? 31" axle to axle...just under 300 feet per second. Killed numerous deer, lots of hogs, and a few others. Almost pulled the trigger on the Matthews Z7 Extreme last year, but I've never had a problem with the AR and haven't seen any reason to change. Plus I'm cheap.

I shoot a 2008 Diamond Justice. I bought it in 2010 from the local shop when I decided to start archery huntin. I have taken 3 shots, and taken 2 deer and one sheep.
Just shot it at the Range last week... I shoot Easton EPIC STs with Muzzy 3 blades. My arrow/broadhead dressed out weighs 401gr and it shoots 267 fps. That cals to 62+ ft/lb of KE. I am happy with that!
