I've used my .17 HMR on jackrabbits, skunks, foxes, coons (might take a couple of shot sometimes) and the neighbors cats that roam my place looking for quail.

I've shot a multitude of turtles with mine. Most of the time it was at a distance of 165 yds. I don't think they can see a great distance so when you shoot one and they all disappear, in a few minutes they are back!

They are really good on jackrabbits and cottontails if you limit yourself to head shots, same with squirrels.

how come I can take a .22 lr and shoot cottontails and squirrels in the sholder and it puts them down right there, but it takes limiting yourself to headshots with a .17?

Because a shoulder shot with a 17HMR ballistic tip will destroy a rabbit or squirrel.

The 17 is great for killing stuff, but if you want to have anything left to eat, then you need to stick to head shots.
That is all I am getting at, the 17's are a lot more destructive on body shots than a 22 LR.

Maybe I was lucky or something but mine does just fine in heavy wind. Last time out we were shooting prairie dogs at 100-150 yards with 30+ mph crosswinds and I didn't have much if any drift at all.
Awesome round though, but it does way too much damage if your wanting to eat anything. It will cleanly take a rabbit or prairie dog head off out to almost 100 yards.

You had better make a perfect shot on a yote if you don't want to chase it a long way 
I've seen several yotes take off and run a LONG way after a strait on shot from a 17  . Just my .02

I have tried the 20 grain rounds in my hmr, and quite accurate. the 20 grain was designed for larger game and mostly to keep from blowing up anything you care to eat. not as destructive, but potent as heck.

.17 hmr or rem.....I think the .17 rem is better for longer shots and the hmr is just a .22 with a little more sccuracy and speed....use the hmr for the same things you would use a .22 for.......17 rem can get out to further distances and is better for yotes and bobcats

Never shot one just watched other people hit big yotes with them and watched them run. I shoot my .223 or 22-250 and they don't move

I love mine. I shot a fox with it. There is a post on the photo section where HomeRunSlayer shot a hog with his and killed it. I have shot a bunch of stuff with it and it is fun to shoot.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.
