So I finally broke down and bought a new crossbow. I have not used a bow to hunt since way back in the mid to late 90's, back before crossbows were legal to use for deer.
I am really looking forward to the extra month of hunting I get this year.
I bought a brand new Barnett Quad 400, still in box, never opened. I looked around quite a bit, and did some pricing as well, and it seems I got a pretty good deal on this. I know at Academy and Cabelas, these crossbows sell for around $399.99 + tax. I found a guy on Craigslist selling this one for $250.00, but walked away with it for $220.00
Anyone ever use this crossbow ro know anyone who has? What are your thoughts and opinions? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have never hunted with one, but I did shoot one once at my 3D range.

It was LOUD. Make sure the deer is relaxed and not looking your way. I would think that ducking an arrow would be a problem with some of these loud crossbows.

Other than that have fun and good luck!

I also like to "hunt" sporting clays with my Benelli SuperSport!

I've been hunting with a crossbow since before it was legalized for deer for anyone without a Dr. note which has been several years ago, and the Xbow I have is an old Darton that was made before all the manufacturers jumped on the band wagon making all these "fast Xbow" and catering to the novice Xbow hunters who think speed is everything.
These "fast" Xbows are going to be loud, and there isn't a Xbow made that will outshoot the speed of sound, and a deer can duck an arrow even at close range from one of those speedy Xbows.
Just like hunting with a regular bow you have to shoot at a deer that is relaxed, and have some natural forces such as a slight breeze rustling the leaves or some other woods sounds that can help mask the tuning fork WHACKIIIIIIINNNNGGGG sound that bow makes.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Well i have never shot an animal with one but my bro in law had to use one due to a wrist injury 2 years ago and he killed 2 deer and a load of hogs with his. My real advice for you is to buy good quality bolts and broadheads and practice and practice some more. Also the one he had would robin hood at 40 yards
