Well lets just say I am the F.N.G to Hog hunting and Texas as well. I was born an raised in KY, where there are only domestic hogs. And I would really like to get into hunting them hogs. I was wondering if you seasoned hog hunters could throw out some basics for hog hunting. Like best time to hunt, baiting, etc. that I have not already read on this forum. Also, I hunt on public land if that matters.

I don't think you can bait on public land. You will just have to look for sign, and hunt. Or you could pay around 200 bucks for a hog hunt.

Probably don't want you to give out too much info to a aspiring hog hunter. But remember we are all hunters, and that makes us brothers

Mesiah's way is the best I have heard of yet!! Seriously though, from the public land I have hunted you can carry corn in and bait, but you can not set out traditional feeders. So I believe one could bait a hole. You would have to read the regs of the controlling authority in regards to baiting. I would concentrate on finding an area with alot of pig signs. Still hunting works pretty good but can be tough going if the place is really thick with brush. We did that on Granger. Got alot of shots, but hit alot of brush too. It's fast paced and you have to be on your toes.

This time of year look for water and the area they bed down in then find the highway most traveled , set up camp and wait .If you thing you can put up a game camera without it getting stolen do that,to get a pattern.

Two basics IMO: Bait and timing.
You have to keep these things baited up or they will seek other sources of nourishment. Duh!
Timing is the hardest part, although with the use of trail cams this is negated. Just go put out some corn and wait til you start seeing it missing every day. Then go put out a trail camrea and see when they are hitting it. Our hogs are very patterned, although the patterns do change. Once you figure out when they are hitting it, get out there about an hour ahead and just wait.
If you manage to kill one of the beasts, always atleast drag it off. Never let it lay in your hunting grounds because it will ward off other potential prey.
Good luck, -Coy

heres the stragedy i use, dig a hole about 6" deep 2' by 6' hole size will vary,.. strip down naked, have wife or significant other coat you in molasses, roll around in a pile of corn till completely coated making sure to get all folds, ripples, or crevices, covered evenly, gently walk over to hole and lay prone perfectly still with a leatherman in one hand and snacks in the other in case you get hungry, wait till the hogs start eating corn off your body and pull the leatherman tool of choice out and slay the feral beast!! the pliers are my personal weapon of choice, use them to grab the sows by the teats, the boars by the............... well you know....... results may vary
-------------------- IF YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSE TO EAT ANIMALS WHY ARE THEY MADE FROM MEAT?
Post Extras: Again i must stress!!!!! Rusults may vary!! This method is not for use by amatures or the feint of heart!!!

lol, another use for a leatherman, you learn somthing new everyday. i know of one thing that is similar that my buddy who's a game warden told me about. he works choke canyon and told me about a person from up north that was camping with his wife and kids. he got a call from one of his rangers they told him they needed him down at the campgrounds. when he got their they were standing around a bunch of javelina's and in the middle of those javi's was a pile of corn with a toddler sitting on the pile of corn. the guy thought it would make for a neat picture. needless to say they were able to rescue the child. i bet you that guy asked some local how he could get a good picture of his kid with some hogs or javi's and they told him to do this as a joke, and he took them literaly.
