Was in cabelas today and over an hour wait of people buying ARs. I listened to most of the guys just pick out a $1500+ piece and didn't know anything about them. Granted I don't know anything about them, but would have researched before dropping anything over $600, these guys just didn't care.

Good info. Thanks for posting.
I, myself, have never felt the need or want of an AR15 platform weapon until recent developments.
Now I am in the market for one but since the only experience is with the Colt M16A1/2 I have to confess I am one that is in need of education so I am trying to soak up all the info I can.
Thanks everybody for sharing your knowledge.

Huge amount of info, great stuff to know if you are buying a blackgun.

I'm going hog hunting soon & was told I can't use .223 because it just isn't effective against a big hog. I'm planning on using a 30/30 instead. What's your experience hunting large hogs with .223 or 30/30?

Obviously the bigger and more force, the better. But I think most people that use a proper bullet will tell you .223 works just fine. Hornady TAP and VMax 75gr work very well for taking down a hog of any size.

But without marksmanship, it doesn't matter what bullet you use.

Don't know who is telling you that .225/556 isn't affective. I've tajen dozens of them with .223. You cannot take a shoulder or chest shot. And a vitals shot needs to be dead on because you won't get much of a blood trail.

30/30 is going to have about the same limitations as the 223, especially from a lever action.

I have two rifles for hogs, I have an AR15 chambered in 300AAC and night vision, and for day hunts I have an AR15 .223 varmint. I load 115gr ballistic tips for the 300aac, and for the 223 I load either 68gr or 72gr which evevr I can get. I would load lighter bullets on the 223 but my barrel HATES anything below 68gr.

My biggest 223 kill was close to 200 lbs @ 85 yrds. Largest 300AAC Is about 125 lbs and 50 yrds.

I wouldnt use either 223/300aac or 30/30 at more than maybe 150 to 175 yrds. they will drop the hogs at that distance, but you pretty much need a good neck shot.
