Just went over to a friends house and busted some clays this evening. Shot a box of Remington cheapy #8's, then I guess I shouldn't have brought them but I blew a box of #4 Black Cloud too. I was shooting OK with the cheapy 8's but when we got down to the duck loads I turned on the afterburners, man that was fun!

So the #4 black clouds shot the clays better than the #8's?? Yea don't you know, with their flight stopper wad and "cutting" steel I'm sure it made them second clays on report pairs just explode into a million pieces....

Hey Hopedale its been a while, I got hung up over @ the TFF because the tournament fishing bug is eating me alive, wanting to get back in that game after being away from it for about 14 years, just can't aford to scratch that itch right now so talking about sooths the pain a little...... I got another box of BC I plan to burn on some clays before to long, I'm jumping from the BC ship and I going to climb on board the Hevi Metal train. I saw some gel block test done using Hevi Metal comparing it to BC and regular steel loads. This stuff is vicious and it looks like I can use it for about what I pay for BC if I shop around......

Can you share with us where you saw this gel block test? Several of us on here like to spend our days endlessly debating shotgun ballistics etc, to no end, for no gain either way, usually with little to no reason or credible evidence to back our positions, often mostly in inept attempts to rile our fellow sportsman. Even if they shut down this website to try and stop our endless mistake ridden banter blah blah, we would just find another site to carry on our hopeless diarrea of the keyboard, cha cha cha. I dont care how it shoots I'm not wasting a $23 box of bad a** duck shells on clays. Plus lead is always 10 times better on anything.

My 2 cents on shells is this, I hunt prollly 75 days a duck season ( calm down I hunt in the HPMMU ) I have seen and shot almost every brand of amo out there. I really think its next to impossible to have an input on any amo out there if all you have shot of that certain amo is 1 box. If you dont likre the price, then dont buy it! Its real simple, You dont need to start bashing someone over an amo that you have never shot, or will never shoot over the princeple that it cost more than YOU are willing to pay. Now if you have shot at least 10 boxes of it and still think its crap then state your reasons why its bad or a gimick. If your only reason is your to cheap or jealous that someone shoots it then keep it to yourself. Until you have on hands experience with it and by that I mean 10 boxes or more, then keep your trap shut because you know not of what you speak of! I could have charts and graphs that say Ford pickups get crappy fuel mileage, but if all I drive is a Chevy and never drove a Ford how would I really know?? So if you hate BC or heavy meatal, or Hypersonic, or tungston, or whatever then tell us why after you shoot 250 rounds and then tell us why they didnt perform to your standards and what was the are you shot in and where, were the shots taken ( 25, 35, 45, or 50 yards ) very simple. Until then if all you have is someone elses data or numbers then what you say doesnt amount to a hill of beans.

And if your hunting buddy shoots equally well as you and he decides to make a switch to another load why can't you compare his kill rate to yours? Again, assuming yours and his kill rates and cripple rates were about the same.

Would be glad to…..We get the DU magazine and a few issues ago they had an article about steel shot. They ran some test regular steel vs BC vs Hevi Metal. I don’t remember exactly what brands of steels shot they tested; it had to be Winchester/Federal/ Remington. The test was mainly about shot penetration and I want to say they were shooting gel blocks that were probably about 16 to 18 inches thick @ 40 yards????. The regular steel was going about a 1/3 of the way through roughly, the BC loads were getting about the same with their regular steel pellets and the actual BC shot weren’t even going that far; I guess because of the resistance created by their shape. The Hevi Shot, the steel loads mixed in with that were doing about the same as the others, but the tungsten pellets were going almost completely through the block. Needless to say, it left me speechless when I saw that. Yes it cost more than Xperts but if you spend the time on the range to get you shooting skills up to par and shoot good shells you’re going to spend a lot less money in the long run because you will be shooting a lot more 1:1 shots……I probably don’t shoot 25% of the shells that I used to shoot for the same amount of ducks….my two cents….

Just a thought. Random questions.

The regular steel was going about a 1/3 of the way through roughly 6" is plenty far enough to get to the vitals. Buy what you want, but at 40yds even a properly patterning load of Expert's will kill ducks stone dead.

Just a thought. Random questions. I would also ask how many hunts this is based on, the number of shells used, and the number of ducks killed. If you are hunting 4 or 5 times a season, which is what you have stated in the past, your numbers don't mean much.

Just a thought. Random questions. Practice had a lot to do with the better shooting but I worked the pattern thing too and got the shotgun I use up maximum effeiciency with the pattern at 40 yards shooting black clouds. I did some work with Xperts and just never could quiet get what I was looking for. I tried about 3 diffrent choke tubes but only one size shot, #2. I don't know what would have happened with #3's or #4's. I'm getting the cart ahead of the horse a little bit with the Hevi Metal because it has to pattern to my liking or I won't shoot it. I will be testing with it soon. With that kind of penetration it has to have more knock down power than anything I have used so far. I've shot most all the popular brands of steel shot, except for Kents and I plan ot give those a try as well. I have had an Expert shell apart and didn't like what I saw. It looked like they filled it with a few #2 shot and what ever scraps that didn't make the cut from the steel shot factory, I just don't see any way that is going to out pattern a premium load, especially at a distance.......

BC for clays! Yea, I've seen some devastation with that hevy metal, but HM is proud of those shells. I got a few boxes of Kent last year and am happy with the performance. Good to see you back.

I have been doing some research on shell prices at diffrent stores and I have found out about the best prices you can find are @ Simmons Sporting Goods in Bastrop, La.....they carry all major brands including Kents and they do mail order as well. I've got to take my son back to La. Tech next weekend and I plan on running over to Bastrop to do a little shopping while I am home. Prolly going to get a box of #4 Hevi's and a full choke tube for Hevi's to play with at the range....

you must hunt every day of the season to invest this much time in researching all of these different shotshells and choke tubes in order to cut down 25% on your shell usage during the season.

Wasup Hayracker! I just don't like getting my butt kicked when I go in the field. I got my arse handed to me the first couple of seasons because I didn't know what I was doing. Get to go about once or twice a week and like to make the best of it. If I were hunting everyday I don't think I'd make such a big deal over it. I usually burn vacation days for these hunts too so I have that invested as well. I refuse to hunt on the weekends at all on "The Barney" its just too; for lack of better words to describe it, "Barney" on the weekends......
Isaiah 40:31 "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
