if its the early model, stith mounts are the way to go (no drilling of the receiver, which devalues the gun) email me for more info "texken@austin.rr.com"

a fast way to tell if its factory d&t, the "savage 99" was moved down on the side of the receiver band from the very top, that way it avoided the lettering being in the way of the holes.

not really, "THE NINETY NINE" by Murray is the bible of 99's (ebay), it explains all the different models and dates, there are variations, when you are looking at 99's ( the really collectable grades) in the early 1900's if a customer called, Savage would make any changes that were at all possible. todays collectors, it is all about condition. no non factory holes, metal or wood. example...the early 1899's were not fitted with swivel studs, one that has had swivels attached diminishes value greatly, as does the drilling for scope mounts, wheather its on the top or side of reciever.

not all had savage 99 on the receiver, mine only has the ser # on the receiver. it does have the box magazine if that makes a difference. a fast way to tell if its factory d&t, the "savage 99" was moved down on the side of the receiver band from the very top, that way it avoided the lettering being in the way of the holes.

Correct, but he never said if it was an older brass counter style or the "newer" box mag style. not all had savage 99 on the receiver, mine only has the ser # on the receiver. it does have the box magazine if that makes a difference. a fast way to tell if its factory d&t, the "savage 99" was moved down on the side of the receiver band from the very top, that way it avoided the lettering being in the way of the holes.
