I was talking to a few friends of mine over the weekend and we were talking about the rising cost of everything and how it will effect our hunting this coming season. I am curious to know if there is anyone else out there that is in the same position as I am. I have decided to get off our lease in west texas and hunt some family owned land in east texas to eliminate the lease cost but the cost of fuel will still be more then I want to pay. Then with what will probably be $9 a bag corn I have decided to plant some large food plots and turn my feeders way back. Anybody else feeling the pinch of this rising cost of life??

Yep, I sure am. We try to carpool any chance we get to split the cost of fuel. I am feeding year round this year for the 1st time in my life but I figure that $30 a month is not that bad. I mix Record Rack Golden Deer Nuggets with my corn which is more expensive but not that bad. I figure that I spend around $2000 a year for deer hunting alone which I think is a little too much but I love it and I would not trade my time in the woods for anything in the world.

We wait till we have a big list of things to get before going the 20 mile round trip to town. Unless its something for farm equipment and needed immediately but that doesn't always happen every week.

Preliminary predictions for the upcoming hunting seasons are not out yet but you can bet your sweet tootie that dove hunting will be down from 25%- 35% this year. There is no telling how it will affect other outdoor hunting sports.

Some have made the statement that they will continue their endeavors in hunting without let up because they can!!! How many "I cans" are there out there?? Some of those "I cans" may be hunting by themselves which is no fun!! Time will tell.

You're certainly not the only one feeling the pinch!

I believe we will see more leases available this year than ever before. The price of gas alone has caused some major financial bleeding for most, including myself. That, along with the price of corn, I bet there's a good number of folks that will be forced off of there current leases.

It's a damn shame!!!

fuel prices are going to be horrible when the season gets here..i have thought about buying a 1200$ vw van to drive back and forth to the lease..i bet that would look sweet with my arctic cat and my buddies rhino hooked on back..oh well , i have no shame...it will be fun to drive to the beer store.

Thats where I am at on the fuel as well. My dad and I have been on this lease with other family members for four years, we each pay $2500 a gun and could not ask for a better lease but by the time we pay for corn and pay for fuel to hunt 4 trips from October through December we are easily going to spend an additional $1000-$1500 and at $4000 a person per year I just can't hang anymore. We have always ridden together which helps and we usually stay for nearly a week each time we go. But it is a 850 mile round trip for us and at todays diesel price that is $240 a trip. I always told myself that nothing would keep me from stayin on this place and here I am getting off, not happy about it but I just can't justify $4000 a year. I have another buddy that is getting off of an awsome lease in Pearsall for the same reasons and know some others that have not made up their mind yet. I agree, I think that that there are going to be some leases available this year for sure.

In the 90s I drove my 78VW conv with my dune buggy attached to and from the DL. Just picture me with my guns sticking out of the backseat with a blanket in my lap(bug heaters sux) as families look with there mouths open at me as I pass them on I20 west.
No one would ride with me so I have no shame either

It hasn't slowed down my non-resident hunters from booking hunts. For the ones that are booking in state living more than 4 hours away its put a very dramatic slow down on them. Its cheaper for the hunters out of state to plan a hunt and book an airline ticket in advance and me pick them up in Austin. For the resident hunter in the Dallas area it will cost them more than that plane ticket to drive down here at the current gas prices unless its a group sharing the cost of the fuel bill.

That is exactly what has kept me from being able to afford a lease - the costs that go with the lease itself.

Corn, travel cost, lodging, a day or two off work, feeders, cameras, stands, etc etc etc... it all adds up real fast....

the cost of hunting + being a divorced dad = not gonna happen

At least not without some of the very generous friends i have made on this site. so yet another very special thank you for those who have had me out.

lets see , diesel fuel now and then and the difference between....what to do....

LAST YEAR diesel 3.15 gallon @ 29 gallons =91.35x 6 trips=548.10 (last year)
THIS YEAR diesel 4.15 gallon @ 29 gallons =120.35x 6 trips = 722.10
a difference of 174 dollars....seems like 174 dollars wouldn't be worth cancelling your whole deer season would it? that is based on one tank per trip as a starting place..I'll pay it though becuase it means too much to me..i couldn't just throw away my lease because of fuel prices...i need it to keep me sane.my sanity is worth much more valuable to me than the money i earn going insane.

The guy that runs our lease is going up by 50% and he told us that he would last year before we paid him.(which was better than a lot I have heard of) This is totally his choice to do so, but he will not have me on next year. One is the price he wants for what is out there... the other is that deer hunting just isn't doing it as much for me anymore... no rush when he walks out before I shoot.

I will be doing a lot of duck hunting this year on mostly public property and took the money I would have spent on a lease and bought a hunting boat.

I drive my Toyota corolla towing a 4x8 trailer with the cooler and 4 wheeler. I get 24 mpg towing(400 mile round trip) and every body at camp pokes fun at me but I get out more than they do because it cost me half what they spend. So if your heading east on I30 and see a little white Toyota 4door corolla towing a 4 wheeler that's bigger than the car don't laugh. We have good roads and drainage on the lease and are well cared for by owners. I know most of you guys have to have 4x4s just to get to your camp. Sold the diesel crew cab I was going broke and that was last year.

When the season starts a whole lot of carpooling will be going on at our camp. I'm on a new lease this year with good roads so once everything is set-up. I'll be heading up in my KIA Spectra and let the Suzuki Samari take over.

My lease is in Angelina County and I live in Liberty County. It's about 200 miles round trip and takes around 1/2 tank in my Dodge 1500, $60.00. The lease was $385 last year and hear it was going to be $400 this year. I feed more during season than off season. I figure about $200 for corn. I am going to plant some food plots this year. I have a house 3 miles from the lease that is paid for, only pay about $30 a month during season for electric and $22 for water and waste. Food is probably $300 during season to feed my fat a$$. Bullets = $20.

I usually spend the first 2 weeks of gun season up there and make daily trips about 10 times. I will cut that down to about 4 trips for 3 days each to save on gas. I also spend the first week of bow season there.

I have killed 3 bucks the last two years since joining so that is good for me since I am the only one in the house that eats deer.

All in all I will probably spend $1200 this year hunting total if you don't count the new Bushmaster AR-15 I got for Easter.

God Bless our troops

I'm going to slow down a little. The price of gas, corn, ammo, etc....is really going up. If my lease does not go up I will keep it. I've been paying the same amount now for elven years.....I've been lucky so far that the land owner has not gone up. The folks on the lease next to ours pay triple the price we pay per acre.

did you get your money back on your diesel? i bought on last april when diesel was $2.80 a gallon, was loving it in september when it was $2.53, now i saw it for $4.22 today and although i hate to entertain the thought, i'm afraid i would lose money if i were to sell my diesel. the $560 payment is getting tough to swallow though, when its not my daily driver

It was 1990 f-350(paid off long ago) and well used but had lots left. used the money on a 27' 1988 winnebago motor-home for the lease. no more freezing my butt off in the old old death trap cab over.

Pyledriver..... Dude I thought you were one of the "because I can " guys??? According to your post on 4WDs it didn't sound like the gas crunch was bothering you at all and you said "nuff said"???

Do you have a picture of that? I hunt in a Honda Civic and it's amazing how much stuff you can fit in one of those things if you need to make room. I can also stand on the roof and put corn in the feeders as well.

I posted elsewhere that it might also effect the price of leases. The land owner will be caught between 2 opposing forces. His costs of everything are sky rocketing and not enough people will be able to take advantage of his other asset, the deer. The rancher is going to between a rock and a hard place.

All of this so we could bail out a bunch of crooks in the financial sector, buy Chinese junk and use dirtier burning fuel.

We got off our lease this year the owner decided to go from $1600 to $2000 and took away the quail and turkey. We told him he could keep it and the sad fact is he will get the money. I dont think anybody should hunt for free but how much is enough? 5 guys at $1600 each on 800acres of scrub brush and cows will more than pay the taxes and a big chunk of change to boot. I wish i didnt have to say this but unfortunatly i just cant pay that and all the other money it takes to go anymore.
