Got a 1984 Yamaha Tri-moto 225 Shaft 3-wheeler cheap. I'm trying to get it running since it sat for 10 years. I cleaned the carb, replaced the oil, oil filer and spark plug. Cleaned the fuel line out, washed the air filter. Transmission seems to work (I tried to push start it.) I am getting a spark. Fuel is making it to the carb. The carb might still be clogged, but does anyone have much experience with this or other engine repair? Just looking for other things to try or any helpful hints or working on this type of machine.

Oh yeah, don't tell me they are dangerous. I know. I was told by the crotch-rocket racing pot head that was working at the cycle shop where I found the oil filter.

3 wheelers are not dangerous.
folks who put their kid on one
with no supervision or protective gear are.

the carb is most likely jammed with
dirt and mung. if it was turned over
trying to start it with trash in the
carb or lines, that stuff is now wedged
tightly in the passages of the carb.also,
there are teeny-tiny little holes in the
throat of the carb called air bleeds.
they are neccesary to proper idle and
high speed operation of the carb. you'll
have to get it off and it will need a thorough
douche and you need to blow through those
teeny holes with a rubber-tipped air
blow gun. also check where the carb mounts
for any cracked rubber mountings or
bad gaskets. any air leak of any kind
will cause malfunction.

(oh. . .and push it out in the bushes
and buy a honda)

The only thing I can think of is to pull the carb and soake it in Barryman's carb cleaner and put the carb back on the try starting it again. Also see if there is an inline fuel filter and replace it.

Spray some ether into the carb and see if it starts. Always remember you need three things for it to run. Spark, fuel and compression. If you have spark and fuel get a compression tester and see what it has. Most engines need 90psi or more but some vary. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys. I got this for $50. The guy I got it from picked it up and decided (or his wife decided) he had too many projects going so passed it on to me.

I'll be pulling the carb again this week and I'll let it soak for a while. If that doesn't work, I'll look at the compresion tester.

I had one back in the day, dirty carb will kill how strong is your spark , and no compresson no run , also make you you use high octane and an ethonal stabilizer when you get it running

Git the carb cleaned good. I might have to replace the needle valve. I think it the reservoir is overfilling. I got it to start and run. It's rough. Pops constantly and almost backfireing. Wondering if this could just be because it has sat for so long. If so, will letting it run eventually clean it out? Also, it dies if you push the throttle.

But it runs. Now to get it to run well...

did you ever clean out the jets
and air bleeds with compressed air?
if you don't free up those passages,
it will never run good. solvents and
aerosol sprays won't work for that.
if the bowl is overfilling, is the float
sunk or defective? if it's a brass float
you can shake it to see if there is gas
inside. if it's a nitrophyl or plastic
float, you'd be best off to replace it.
you'll also need to check the float
height adjustment to make sure the
needle and seat are shutting off correctly.

also sounds like you have an air leak
somewhere.

have you checked the valve adjustment
and timing?

I have confidence in the carb. The needle seat might be damaged, but it seems to hold. The mechanic at work helped break it down and clean it out.

My next thought is timing. Not looking forward to that. I've never messed with timing before.

was this bought not running, or
did you already have it and just
park it?

Bought not running from a guy who bought it not running. Has been sitting for over 10 years. Thought $50 to be paid "whenever you get around to it" was a good investment.

i'd check valve clearances first off.
spitting and sputtering sounds like v.c.
maybe.
been since 80's since messed w/ yamaha.
broke 2 toes on right foot w/ one.
if i remember right, they have a
spring-loaded cam chain tensioner like
honda. i would ck.that after checking v. clearances.
