A 700 and a Ruger American are like comparing apples to prunes

A M77 rifle uses a Mauser action isn't prone to jamming, can be loaded upside down and doesn't go off when you push the safety forward

Realtree Europe's sales director Ian Harford really likes his ruger american in 30-06.

My opinion usually doesnt matter cuz i dont shoot a minimum of 375 on deer( grin )and im under 18. I think it's a great gun, but for the "economy" sort of gun, you should probably get a Weatherby Vanguard or Remington 700(lower end, yes i know they get to over $1k stock)

Let it begin..........again popcorn

Your opinion isn't your own, it is someone elses that you read that gets paid to say nice things about a certain brand.

Drop an extra $100 and get a plain Jane SPS.

It's a lot better rifle

Just saying, most 700s don't go off when you click the safety off, because I have one, and I know lots of others that do also. And think about it, how often is the m77, and Winchester 70 in the military today vs the 700. And if comparing the 700 to the ruger American, like apple to prunes, the 700 is easily the apple.

After reading through the other posts, I must know where you think Savage is made? Just guess, don't look it up.

not most of them, but some will

i have seen first hand a 700 fire when the safety was clicked off.

and all that military B.S has no weight with me. the military employs 870's and mossberg 500's. enough said.

A sniper rifle and a hunting rifle are two different animals.

I can tell you don't have much experiance with hunting guns. its ok. When you get some real life, first hand experiance then you come talk to us.

Don't have a clue where savage is made but for some reason I'm thinking Montana, which makes no sensed know but I don't look at savage much. And 870s and 500s are shotguns, not sniper rifles. And a sniper rifle and a hunting rifle are the same thing, it just depends on how you use them, just like another gun. The military bs might not have any weight with you, but they do use it, and they use it because it works.

I feel the same way. All this over a rifle an American manufacture decided to call the American. The rifle is made to compete at a pricepoint that other manufactures are apparently making a lot of money at. This thread has gone so far offtopic that I had to go back and look at the OP to remember what it was.

back
To the OP no I have not looked at or tried the Ruger American but I bet it is a better rifle than the Remington 710 or 770. Ruger is known for solid products and for its pricepoint this one probally is. But could you please edit the OP so it is spelled correctly.

I won't buy a Remington since Cerberus bought them, I feel the quality has gone downhill.
That being said the Remington 700 is the number one selling bolt-action rifle in history. My 700's are all pre buyout and are all super accurate. I like the looks of a Model 70 better and they seem to be better made but in my experience the 700 has been more accurate.

Totally agree on the model 70; great rifle with a long and on going service history with our military. I own one in .308 and they don't cost an arm and a leg albeit more than the Ruger American.

For those on a tight budget, I believe the Ruger American would make a great rifle, you just have to know the limitations; I wouldn't consider excessively long shots with them, but for the hunting that 99% of us do, I'm confident that it'll do it's job. I've handled one, and though they feel more like toys than, say a #1, I have great confidence in Ruger to put out a quality product. Every Ruger that I've owned has left me nothing to be desired, right out of the box they bring it all. That can't be said, however, for the Remington 770's and 710's. To me, those two models are bow range rifles. Couldn't shoot a group tighter that 2" at 50 yards which is totally unacceptale, the consistency isn't "shot", it doesn't exist with them.

If you just gotta have a budget "bolt aciton" (that is to say that handi-rifles are off the table), I would say Ruger is topping everything else out there, but I would encourage an eventual upgrade. (Please note that I have not fired one)
A little side note on the Handi-Rifle: I've owned one in the past and to me if the type of action isn't specified, it's probably the best bet on a budget.

Regards.

Lol, Unfortuantely The Remingtons, Winchesters, and Rugers are all based off the Mauser 98 Design. With certain parts the winchesters and rugers still interchange with the 98 to this day. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but nothing about the actions of the rifles you speak of were 100% American in original design.

If you want a quality all american rifle, your options are truely limited in the non-custom market.

The Winchesters model 70's and Remington 700's have served our military snipers well so they get my vote. The design history isn't a deal breaker for me, it is what it is. I know that the Winchesters models that were built on the mouser actions were great rifles strongly sought by the older among us who have had a lot more experience with them. I've been told by those I look to for guidance, (we're never too old to benefit from those with more experience), that if I come across the mouser action model 70 to pick it up...and when I have the money, I probably will seek one out.
