Well, my only source was an internet google searching, so I still don't know. One source was www.venomousreptiles.org

I guess I've been lucky, I've been in Texas over 35 years and never seen a live rattle snake in the wild except once... It was the last day of spring turkey season in Blanco Co.

txhntr - where did you see these studies? It might be neat to read. Or very boring...

I will have to go back and look. When you catch and play with an animal that poses that much of a threat, you tend to read as much as you can on them. I used to catch them all the time, gas dens, pulled them out from crawl spaces and would milk and defang some for pictures and pranks. Lol

Blancobuster - that is what worries me....

txhntr - catch and play? Oh Lord. I've beat a lot of cotton mouths to death with fishing poles, etc. But catch and play. NOT ME..... No big deal on the study. Just if it's easy to find.

Can't find the original articles, but here are a few quotes from some

Kellaway (1931) concluded that Australian venomous snakes were not only immune to their own venoms, but also to similar types of venoms from other species of snakes. Douglas, Nicholl & Peck (1933) concluded that some highly venomous North American snakes exhibited no exceptional immunity to their own venoms within the context of injection by one snake into another similar snake if the species has highly potent venom.

Here is some more from a book...

I've seen a water mocasin do that after he was shot once but never a snake do that as soon as he was picked up.

I've been told that if it's not a clean kill, and the rattler writhes around, not to eat him, because he may have bit himself, but never have heard of one biting himself just being picked up.

One time I unloaded my .22 into a rattlesnake. Pulled it out of the brush. And it bit itself as well.

That's crazy. I wish everyone I saw bit itself.

Most snakes can ingest their own venom with no ill effects at all, but if the venom is injected into their blood stream, they will not have immunity to the venom.
This is not only my beliefs but also based on internet research from numerous current articles.
