I am restricted to shotgun only in the location that I hunt. Would a slug do the trick? If so, at what distance?

i dropped one last weekend at about 40-45 yards with a short barrel 12g i used win. 2-3/4 hollow point slugs i here there is a slug out there by Brenneke that comes out the barrel with a spin wich gives you better accuracy check it out and go for it

how far can you maintain a 6inch group?
for those big ranch shoots from helicopters they often use buckshot or less you'll be fine if you can hit them

with my stock and barrel setup im hitting 6-8in groups at 50 yrds with a full length barrel and stock you should be in the 6in group its even better with a rifled barrel you can hit that at a 100yrds and 3in groups at 50yrds with the right setup

You guys need to move into the CURRENT world of shotgun slugs!! Rifled barrels and sabot slugs. I can get 1.5" groups AND BETTER from my scoped slug gun AT 100 YARDS. I can shoot the 1.5 groups no problem for 5 shots! That's about the limit BTW, even with my ported barrel. The slugs I use are expensive-Remington Premier Corelokt ultra bonded-but state that they are good out to 150yd. I haven't tested that range yet..
So, the answer to the question posted is yes, a slug will do the trick.

Yea but what about at 20 yds. Where we hunt most if not all shots are under 50. Most under 30.
Brenneke KOs are great and cheap. I found some last year at Gander Mountan in Sherman for around 3 bucks.
If it's smooth bore shoot foster types. If its rifled, shoot sabots.
BTW I have a scope on one of my dedicaited pig slug guns as well. I ought to use it as a deer rifle. 100yds is very doable even with a 20" smooth bore and fixed 4x scope.
It ain't easy being me.

20yds is definitely smoothbore territory! Mostly because you don't need the extra expense for long range accuracy, but also because you could use shot at that range. I have a red dot scope and a regular scope for my slug gun because of that reason. If I know I'm going to be hunting really thick stuff, the red dot gets the nod.
Totally understand the cheap ammo! I bet more deer have been killed with the cheaper brenneke or forster slugs than most realize! My only experience is shooting slugs through rifled barrels, so I guess that's where my response was coming from.

I have a Winchester 1400 12ga. What I am looking for is to simply load some buckshot shells into the chamber while I walk to my turkey spot. If I cross paths with something that cannot be avoided - this is where the slug comes into play.
Does this make sense?

I am hunting public land that only allows shotguns and bow. What is the best method and time for hunting hog? Hog hunting is very new to me.

on public land, (at least where i hunt) you CANNOT use slugs. it is shotgun with bird or buckshot only, or a bow... no excuses. just as a heads up.

I think buckshot would work fine at short ranges. If you're HUNTING pigs then I'd say you want the option of something effective at longer ranges, but if you just want something for 'defense', the buckshot would probably be best. BTW-you really shouldn't have to worry about hog getting after you!
As to the regs, some hunting areas are different as to what they allow. Just be sure you know the regs for your area!

I usually just put peanut butter all over my shoes and ankles, the big bore hogs cant resist it. Old trick. So you live in Frisco, are you hunting corp land or are you driving to decatur

Nearly all slugs are rifled slugs...which induce spin from smooth barrels too... A lot of great things are happening with SabotSlugs and rifled barrels...
Had a Benelli M1 that shot 3-4 inch groups at 100 with whatever you stuck in it...and several 870's with 20in rifle sights that do about that...
00 Buck at 30 is very close to the dot at 100 too....same gun for different apps/ranges. I want someday to see a large group of hogs when the Benelli is present, with one slug and 7 000's coming really close behind it..

Have not tried Decatur yet...I hear that place is crowded with hunters. I frequent Aquilla and when I have enough time, I go to my family's land in Cross Plains. I am going in on a lease in September so I won't have to worry too much about slugs at that point - my browning 270 will take over from there.

I use an old m500 slug gun w/rifled barrel and sabots.killed deer in Illinois for years with it.I could place 3 in a coffe mug at 100yds with a sold rest.12 or 20,but if you go 12 no need for 3inch rounds, slug guns hit hard form both ends!

Slug guns are the bomb... At first I had a 20ga smooth barrel. Now I am dragging the 12 riffled barrel, with the red dot. Both killed hogs DRT. But the 12ga just looks cooler. The best time to hunt hogs is any time you can. Just go out there load the gun and start walking around... Once you find fresh hog sign check out every thicket, blow down, brush pile or cedar tree in the area. Fresh sign means they are close and during the day your best chance is to find them bedded down or moving to another area....
What is Fresh sigh you ask... well a pig track is not fresh unless it rained last night and you are looking at sand... I would look at rooting that still has green grass where it has been dug up. The grass will die not long after it has been rooted up. Wallows with clear water are not fresh.. If it looks like chocolate milk is. Also poop that is steaming or has flies on it. If you can smell them they are close. Hope this helps...
DRT = Dead right there.

A fellow member at the lease dropped a 60#'er two weeks ago with #4 Turkey load at 20 yards. I'd carry 00 if I could'nt have my 7mm with me.
