Always had the same problems but changed to mounting my solar panel high on the barrel and have flex tubing to my feeder motor which has a varmit guard to keep the coons from biting thru the elec wire. Not a problem any more.

I haven't had a coon problem since the pigs showed up.I think the pigs are worse.

I've had very results with the protective cage shown in the photo below. It's the same radius as the inside edge of the 55-gal barrel, making it too far for coons to reach in and get corn off the feeder motor. It's also long enough to fit a solar panel inside. I've watched coons give up trying to get corn beyond the cage before crawling down to eat it off the ground.
