I just got a new ar15 in a 5.56 and need alot of help with ammo. The ar15 is 1and 9 twist so any help would be great

Federal Premium 60 grain with the Nosler Partition - probably the best ammo to feed that gun but they are proud of it.

Bulk M193 55 grain will do just fine.

1:9 should stabilize most anything between 55 grain and 69 grain no problem.

Same twist in my gun. 64 grain bonded bullet from BRVammo company. You can get new brass 20 round boxes or a 500 round box of once fired brass for about $180. I went through 3 or 4 of the 20 round boxes, bought the 500 round crate and have not seen a difference in function or accuracy.

The Nosler Partitions would be good on hogs, but not the m193.

From above, one key thing to notice is that someone said 1:9 should stabilize MOST anything 55-69 grains. I disagree. I say it is entirely hit and miss and gun dependent. Some 1:9's won't get close to stabilizing bullets at the upper end of that spectrum. Any 55 gr bullet will certainly stabilize.

I would look into the Barnes TSX for hogs.
A cheaper option I've heard good things about are the 64gr soft points from BVAC.
Federal Fusion in 62gr would work too but they're not the cheapest.

From what I've read the Barnes bullets are by far the best bullets for hunting currently on the market. Are there other, cheaper options out there? Sure. Dead is dead. As long as it works is all that matters. It all comes down to personal preference and just how much you're willing to spend.


General tips....
Use the HEAVIEST bullet your gun will consistently shoot accurately.
No FMJ. Always use either hollow points, soft point or ballistic tipped rounds.

I like the 64 grs from CTD. They are a bonded core and work well in my 1:8 polygonal

Best advice is to buy a few boxes of 55 gr, 62, 64 etc and go shoot them from a bench. The target will tell you in the end.

Not disagreeing... but with a caveat: stabilazation has to do with length. Generally longer bullets weigh more UNTIL you get into the lead free bullets. For the same weight they will be much longer than a lead core bullet. Stabilizing a 69 gr JHPBT does not neceessarily mean you will get similar results with a bullet weighing 69 grains constructed like a TSX.

My 1:9 RRA shoots the 69 grain lead bullets VERY well. I have not tried the copper alloy bullets yet.

KC has shot several pigs with it, said it works like a champ.

Use the MILSPEC XM193 FMJ around 100 yards it should be fine. As long as the bullet yaws and fragments properly it should provide a really good wound channel. Get the stuff they issue the troops. It's not that accurate but it will work. There are much better choices for shooting animals though.

Personally, for hunting, I'd get some Black Hills Ammunition and use the 68 grain OTM (Open Tip Match). That will dispatch the hogs really nice. Expensive but I doubt you will be chasing a wounded hog. That is about the extent of your 1/9 twist as well. You could also get some MK318 SOST 62 grn OTM from CTD. Those would be cheaper than the black hills and would work very nice. For the money, I'd do that.
