Hey man. I'm in Fort Hood, and New to bow hunting. I have been chasing pigs for a while. Haven't found much. I could really use some help, and maybe someone to show me the ropes. Please hit me back either here or at ny email bubbaski06@hotmail.com.

My experience on Ft Hood is ancient so I can't help you much. When I was there, which was in the pre pig era, some of the biggest deer came from the bow hunting only areas on West Fort by the airport. I knew it as Gray Army Airfield. I recently ran into a guy that just left Ft Hood who confirmined that it's still good out there.

Yea, I do believe it's still there, but am not really sure about the deer or pig hunting out there. Still the new regulations are in bell county the distance between the inner beams must be 13 inches. So one can only assume its still producing big deer.

There are some giants on Ft Hood. I have never hutned there but I hunt close and I have seen some of the deer that have came off there.

I saw of picture of an absolute monster that was hit by a truck last year on HW 116 between Gatesville and Copperas Cove, which is the western boundary of Fort Hood. Not sure where on the stretch it was killed though.

Hello,

My experience is like NSMIKE, ancient. I bowhunted there as a kid and then later was stationed there. What I remember is the hogs and a few black buck antelope primarily stayed in the impact area. I am sure the hog population by now has increased and spread. I went back a few years ago and when I was at the sportsmans center eating I ran into a few locals. Many were guides, most were retirees and they were pretty helpful on where to hunt and ideas about feeders. They offered to take my hunting. I am sure someone will help you being on active duty. My recommendation is to check out the BLORA area. Any training areas that back up to it I am willing to bet probably still produce the best deer.
One more note, I always saw Turkey on Turkey run road.

Good Luck!

The area I referenced has been bowhunting only for a long time. I wouldn't of said anything except I happened to run into someone with recent information. I was stationed on Ft Hood from 1975 to 1978. The area I referenced was bowhunting only then and continues to be bowhunting only today. Any area thats been bowhunting only for that long is going to have some mature bucks.

Contact the sportsman center on Ft. Hood. You'll be able to buy a Ft. Hood hunting licence there as well and fishing if you want to do that. You'll need it, along with your state licence, which can be bought there as well. They will provide you with a rule book and map and some other misc paper work you'll need to have. Hunting on Ft. Hood is open to the public too. You can go to the Visitors Center at the main gate to obtain a pass for hunting purposes. You'll need to know the vehicle licence plate number in which you will use for hunting and have your hunter safety card with you too. The big deal that turns most people off. You will have to register your weapons that you bring onto Ft. Hood. Which is done at the Visitors Center as well. They will give you the general rules for weapons on Ft. Hood. Concealed carry is not authorized on Ft. Hood.

Thanks for the info! Do I need to have my hunter's safety course card or can they look it up, as it should be tied to my license?

I think I am going to do this... I'll call the Sportsman Center and give everyone an update as to any pertinent information.

The deer hunting on base is in one word awsome. You will have to go through a couple of hoops if you are not military but its not bad at all. I hunted last season saw some nice deer. I was in a doe only area which was just fine you cant eat horns huh(lol). Just go to the sportsmans center they will guide you all the way through the process.
dkite.

My experience is also ancient, late 1980's! No hogs out there, but I do remember the best/biggest deer were always in or around the impact areas!!

Last year rule says you must present proof in order to hunt on the military installation. I'm pretty sure you'll have to have your card in hand. Knowing the number or having it listed on your state licence is not enough.

Here's the sportsman center phone number.

I am looking for a local guide to take my husband wild boar hunting the week after Christmas. Langley in Centerville came highly recommended but they are booked. Can anyone recommend an affordable, honest outfitter?

You'd have better luck posting that in the appropriate forum, perhaps the Hog forum, Open Discussion, or Outfitters and Guides.
