Is it just me, or are jeeps now just less popular as a hunting vehicle than they used to be? Is it just a generational thing, because of the UTV, or what?

I do think the utv has stole some of the thunder. But on the flip side Jeeps are still holding their value strong. But with the high price of the utv I would rather just buy a Jeep.

I think they've lost a little ground to small 4x4 pickups as well. I like having a bed to throw stuff into.

I've got to agree. I still hunt out of a Jeep, it's alot of fun, but I think the trucks are probably a little better suited, especially a crew cab.

Until the UTV's come equipped with AC/Heater, I'm not going that route especially for the price of those things.

I think the older Jeeps are still pretty popular among hunters. The newer ones seem to be targeted more towards soccer moms as grocery getters. I think they screwed up the wrangler line when they made a 4 door.

Yep, got me an extended cab 97 Tacoma and I love that truck. I also have a Mitsubishi mini truck and I like it too, just not much cab room in it for guns and such..

I guess I will stick with my Jeep. Tried the wheeler thing and gave it up after I broke a rib just before season opened. Could not load a small pig and riding was not much fun either! Now every time someone gets an animal I get a call for recovery service. These photos are old - there is now an electric winch with a key fob remote on the crane.

I bought a 85 CJ 7 last year and used it in West Texas. Having the windshield and heater was nice. But it was a pain to get in and out of being 6'1" and 220. My buddy hunts out of Ranger Crew there also and has for 3 yrs. He went places I could not. I traded my Jeep to guy for Ranger this summer. Never happier. Easier to get in and out of and can go thru and around stuff I could not in a Jeep. Less flats also.

I think a lot depends on where you hunt. Up here at our property in Montague, a Jeep or UTV is the best bet. Down in South Texas, I think it is pretty hard to beat Lawrence's truck!

Your right about that. My daughter still hasn't figured out how to drive that thing though.

It is hard to beat a good mid day doe hunt on that thing. Load up the top with 4-5 guys, an ice chest of beer, a bottle of Crown, and get to work. Corn a scendero, wait 5 minutes, drop doe.

You either washed the body with very hot water and it shrunk or put too much fertilizer on the wheels and they grew a bunch!

I think part of the Jeeps decline is portability. Our lease is 470 miles away. Towing a Jeep is a pain, a big enough trailer is expensive. Guys can put a 4 wheeler in a truck bed, a UTV on a small trailer.

Why tow a Jeep? Just drive it.

I really think the decline is due to UTVs. And I dont mean 4wheelers. I mean the $10-20k UTVs that are basically like small vehicles. They go anywhere, are super fast, and can haul people, guns, and game like nothing else. Go to a sporting clay shoot sometime and you'll see them everywhere. Kinda like the golf carts of hunting.

Feel your pain, mine gets towed 650 miles to the lease in Nov and then another 650 back to the house in March.

No way, not as far as i have to go. Mine's rigged to hunt and not road friendly. I once blew a tire in Freer and pulled it off the trailer, figuring I'd just drive it on in to Laredo and fix the tire at the lease. Longest 60 miles I ever drove.

I have a 1988 Suzuki Samurai that I use for hunting. It is camo painted, two seater with cargo area. I dropped in a 1.6 8 valve engine from a GEO Tracker and a set of 235-75x15 General Grabber AT2.If I can't get there, it usually isn't worth going anyhow. I considered UTVs first, but then I needed a trailer and all I had was a UTV and a trailer. Samurai is street legal and we drive it everywhere we don't want to take our 2008 Jeep Safari and a lot of places our Safari won't go. If nothing else, we can trailer a UTV behind us.

I have both. One thing a jeep has on the UTV is the ability to drive it on the highway....
