I got this Colt 1991A1 10 years ago (sheesh time flies) for $425 new when I still lived in College Station. It stayed stock for a long time, but I've slowly tinkered with it.
Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags
SS Allen head grip screws
Smith & Alexander grips Cocobolo (I think) Double Diamond
(These are a little too fat for me, I want slim now)
Switched from plastic mainspring housing to a steel arched mainspring housing with lanyard loop, this is an authentic mil-spec surplus part I got at a gun show
Then I added
Chip McCormick SS hammer and sear
Chip McCormick SS thumb safety and slide stop
Chip McCormick SS barrel bushing
The McCormick stuff drops in as long as you get the right part. I bought a McCormick beavertail grip safety, but it has the wrong radius for a Colt (fits Springfields I think, would you like to buy it?)
So then I added
SS Wilson Combat Beavertail (drops in, fits well)
So when I went to put it all back together, I broke the plunger tube off, so I had to order an Ed Brown SS plunger tube and the staking tool. (Takes a $45 tool to install a $10 part.)
Shoots well enough to put a whole mag in the head of a standard target at 25 yards. Not a target gun, but good enough for self defense. I've bought a Wilson Combat adjustable trigger since then, but I haven't felt like pulling the whole thing apart again to change it.
The mag release stayed standard. I had a friend who put an extended button on his, but he kept acidentally hitting the button and dropping the mag, so I decided against it.
I'd still like to change the sights, but I haven't gotten to it either. I think I've got 4 different holsters for it too. I was also thinking I could improve accuracy if I had the slide tightened to the frame, but I really don't think it's worth it.
Besides I got a new toy which is now my go to piece.
Just a little smaller, lighter. Still love the 1911, but a stainless 2" 357 is just handy.
