okay so going to the range and shooting a 3 shot group, my fil is always getting a flyer on the 3rd shot. he looked around and i guess found somewhere that if the barrel heats up to much it will send a flyer.

so my question to yall is, is this true. and how hot is too hot. last time were were out, he brought a heat gun, and measured the barrel at the thickest part and about 5 to 6 inches from there. he noticed that if the barrel got to about 115, it would throw. so we would wait till it cooled and it seemed to work.

also there are no signs of pressure on the casing.

just trying to understand all this.

Take it off 3 round burst......seriously.. 3 rounds shot rapid fire should not be heating the barrel enough to affect accuracy. If it continues I would remove the barrel and replace it. Also if you're using a scope make sure the mounts are tight. I've shot 4 clips full auto on a M16 and could still keep a 3 in. pattern at 100 yrds.

Does the flier always go the same directiom? Had one that was a bedding issue that did simular, As the barrel continued heating it would get futhter out from the first 2 shots.

What rifle is this on? One of the wildcat builds?

beaucfus.....What caliber is he shooting? and what brand and model of rifle is it?

YES!...Heat can affect accuracy especially in the HIGH velocity rounds; My .257WBY heats up quick and after 3 rounds it needs to cool.

No problem while hunting but sighting in or trying new loads and it can be a problem.

THE ANSWER

Bring a can of compressed air with you, the kind you use to blow out computer parts with, between shots open the bolt and use the little red straw that comes with the can to shoot air down the bore(action to muzzle) for 10seconds.

You will notice the difference.

Yah it's the same wildcat...300 win mag down to .264. Around 3400 fps. It does great for the first 2 but that last one just doesn't wanna play ball. I shoot 1 shot and then chamber another round, write down what on the chrono and line up for next shot. So I don't think I'm shooting super quick. I would have to wait about 15 min to take a third shot.

On the last few rounds of shooting I shot the first 2 shots as if I were having to take a second shot on an animal and it was fine. It's a Pac nor barrel 26in. Fluted. It's not throwing super far off, we are still on paper at 800 though.

Just trying to make sure it will be okay. Gonna be able to get out again this weekend with brass that has been fired formed now.

Open the bolt, fill your log, get back on target, slip in a round, and take a shot fairly quick. If you have a powder that is temp sensitive it will heat and shoot differently if it sits in a hot chamber. Though three shots from a cold barrel might be a bit below norm.

I usually take a couple of other guns to get some trigger time in with while barrels cool when I am doing load development. Especially love my .22LR and lately my .17HMR.

Ill shoot the 223 or bull barel 270 anytime, but when I shoot the 300 wby I try to only shoot with cooler temps, on a 90 degree day you can wait 5 minutes and the barel is still hot.

It sounds like a bedding issue. But (like stated), do not chamber a round in a hot barrel and let the round "cook". It will heat up the powder and cause higher pressure effecting the shot. Also, as soon as you fire a round, eject the case and let the chamber cool. I chamber the round seconds before I take a shot when testing loads.
