Got my first deer, a doe, with a bow. If I could bottle the excitement of deer 15 - 20 yards away and the feeling as I let the arrow fly, drug addicts would become bow hunters. WOW, what a rush. The cool weather had the deer moving in my area. I hope everyone else had as great a weekend as I did. Now I have to get back out there for my buck.

No pics. Forgot the camera, and even if had remembered it was dark by the time I pulled her out of the woods. I have the movie replaying in my head though. I have hunted with rifle for years, but I am a bow addict now.

OK! You all want details. I was sitting in my tripod stand and the feeder went off about 6:15pm. I had been sitting there since 3:00 pm, not sure when the deer were moving yet. Hot, worried my sent might travel, even though I had soaked down with Dead Down Wind. I had been caught the weekend before, so I was like a rock as I sat. About 6:30 they arrive for dinner. Two mature does, 3 yearlings, and 2 fawns. My heart was racing, and wasnt sure this 39 year old body could take it. They moved in slow and eat with much caution. I had eyed this one yearling that seemed to be less inhibited as the other does as a good target. She was small, but would be good eating. I slowly pulled my bow into position, waited, and when the time was right drew back. She was in perfect position at 20 +/- yards and I shot. Thought I had just blown a gasket with excitement. She jumped, darted to the left and the other does spooked about 15 additional yards back. Was she hit???? She stood there. Moved about 15 yards away from the feeder. Would she fall? NO, I missed. I am thinking I sat in this dam stand for almost 4 hours sweat my ass off to take my first shot at a deer with my bow and miss. I was bummed. I sat as still as possible and low and behold they moved back in on the feeder. Well a new problem arose. I do not practice with my quiver, so I remove it when I get in my seat on the tripod. I set it on the platform behind my seat. OK, I know, not smart! I am sitting there thinking I have 4 arrows just behind me, and not a one can I reach to try again. The does are all still feeding, and I slowly, ever so slowly reach down to my right to get an arrow, or the quiver and I cant reach it. So I slowly move back to center ant think maybe I can reach from the other side better. So I slowly lean to my left in attempt to reach an arrow, or the quiver. As I reach down and look behind me I realize my first attempt to my right was my closer. Yes, I am exhausted at this point. Moving in slow motion along with the excitement of deer all in front of me is very draining. I make one last attempt to reach from my right around behind my tripod seat to grab the fletching of the closest arrow. Now I had a new problem, not to drag the arrows and quiver across the metal grate of the tripod floor. I was able to put the arrows up buy the fletching of one, and then grad the knock and pick the whole assembly up with two fingers on a knock. You know four arrows and a quiver never felt so heavy. I get the quiver into my lap, pull out an arrow, load it into my bow and place the quiver back on the tripod platform close by. I cant believe at this point that I have been able to do all this and not spook, or get caught by sent by the group of does. Oh well, as luck would have it the yearling I took my first shot at and missed walked directly in front of my tripod at 17yrd, and the rest is history. She ran, limped away, a max of 40 yards and fell. As she walked away I noticed as I had been told by veteran bow hunters, she was gushing blood from one side. It was actually a bad shot, but a lucky hit that clipped an artery. Best kill I have ever had because it was with my bow. Dinner time!!!!

The excitment will never change, just how you deal with it. I guided my son on his first Deer kill when he was 12 years old, He took it with a bow.
