I'm in concern now on the issue of the use of mechanical broadheads on our place. In the past I have had a few bad encounters with hunters using the rage broadhead. It's always been on quartering shots and I'm not really sure why this happens. It has been that way with axis, red deer, and fallow in the past two years. Previously I have let hunters shoot with what they feel comfortable with, as pertaining to choice or broadheads, but I do give a recomendation when asked. I'm thinking now, I may have to choose to just say fixed broadheads, but I know bow hunters are passionate about their sport and their choice of equipment.

I know..my ranch...my rules. But I want to make sure I understand why this is happening more with this type of broadhead than it seems with fixed broadheads.

It will be interesting to see how this hunt turns out. I want to know what happened with that arrow and that red deer hind.

Hope you find it. I shoot mainly pigs with my bow. I've tried the rage broadhead several times on pigs with poor results. If a broad head isn't tough enough for a pig, its not tough enough for me to shoot. I shoot grim reapers now and have had zero complaints, well other than the game camera that was busted on a pass through from a doe. bang

I hear ya. I still shoot my G5 Montec broadheads. I like them and I haven't had much problem with them. A lot of people talked about sharpening them and I do have to spend a good while to get them sharp but I actually don't mind doing that.

If the blades are not opening correctly, that has alot to do with the shot angle. There are very few mechanical designs that will always open on extreme shot angles. I usually see this on quartering away shots. The only mechanical ive seen open perform well in shots like those is the grim reaper. Ive also see rages shoot right through deer and never open on a broadside shot. Personally I think that everyone should be able to shoot a fixed blade. And I feel that the reason they dont is because they cant get them to group with their field points which is a tuning problem. I do think that down the road people will start to go back to fixed blades as more realize that the mechanicals cause more problems then they solve. Ill stick with a fixed blade cause there is nothing on it to fail.

With so many good choices for fixed blades, I have no interest in ever shooting another mechanical again. I have dabbled with rage and grim reaper and have been less than impressed, and the last thing I want going through my mine when drawing on a big buck is whether or not my broadhead will open.

You know when I first started bow hunting it was with the NAP Thunderheads. They were pretty good in my opinion. Then I went to these G5 Montec and have used them since. Probably time to try a few others out there just to see.

This will be my first time bowhunting this year. Using a Horton crosshow. Think Im going with a 150 grain fixed blade broadhead.

Curtis, on the wounded animals, it's just like people who rifle hunt. Bad shot equals long recovery or no recovery at all.

TRUE, kewldeals but "bullets" also play a role. you wouldn't go out and shoot a 150 class buck with a .223 full metal jacket bullet. it's boils down to what the hunter is comfortable shooting out of his setup. I personally shoot both expandables and fixed out of the same quiver for whatever game might come along. I have my expandables called inverters which I have killed many deer with, and I have Magnus stinger 2 blade 100 gr. for those pesky hogs that come along. I have tuned and tested both and they both give me confidence out of my setup.

Totally agree. But, a couple of years ago a guy at the lease shot a mid140's 10-point I'd been hunting. 50 yards with '06 and never found that deer and never saw him again on TC. A buddy that same year shot a 13 point at 312 yards with .243 and deer went less that 30 yards.

Shot placement, no matter the weapon, know your equipment and know when to pull the trigger.

I used the new rage chisel point on a pig this evening and destroyed it.

Rage on Elk,Scimitar,Addax all been extremely deadly none went over 30 yards.

The montec is an awesome fixed blade broadhead.

I shoot Spitfire and have never lost an animal. I have had poor results with Rage, but it was on my first and only shot. Hit a rib and deflected straight up into the spine. Deer dropped, but deflection is no good. Have a buddy that shot spitfires the first 3 seasons he bow hunted and killed the first 6 deer he shot...got on the Rage wagon and lost the next 3.

I know folks that use them love them and defend them to the end, but I could tell too many stories of mishaps to ever trust them again.

I like mechanical broadheads, but there are a few that I will never use.

I have used Vortex mechanical broadheads with good results. Shot several deer quartering to me at 15 yds. I know that is not the best shot but I blow right through them and it is a good clean kill.

I'm not sure it is a mechanical vs. fixed issue as much as a know your equipment and make a good hit issue.

Perhaps, since you have only noticed it with the Rage, you can monitor that or request someone doesn't use a Rage. Have you seen this with other mechanical broadheads?

I definitely still shoot rage's. We have rough terrain so quick knock down is what we need otherwise were tracking through some major tough terrain.

Rage just has great marketing, that's why everyone buys and try's them. I use slick trick, fly like a field point with 4 cutting blades. Or just stick with old faithful muzzy.

I actually like the slick tricks as well. I just started using them as a turkey tip and I have been really satisfied with the slick trick Broadheads.
