I just bought a Savage 99 in 243. I've never owned a savage lever, so I can't wait for it to arrive. The only deer rifle I've ever owned is my Weatherby 270, so I'm hoping this is going to be fun gun without the worries of getting a scratch.

Take care of it and it can be an heirloom for years to come. Ours are working on the second generation with us and will be passed on to the 4th generation. Skipping the kid and going to the grand kids.

I'm using my grandpa's in .300 Savage. Great gun, but it hurts like hell. I think its the stock design; it always seems to slap your shoulder.

If it is one of the ones with the hard butt plate it can be softened a lot with a limbsavers slipon recoil pad without altering the gun unless that would make the legnth of pull too long

I have one in .243. Good shooter. You'll be fine without the limbsavers.

Grandkids may get everything else, but I'm thinking about taking my 99 in 308 with me when I go.........

I still shoot my Grandpa's in .243. He says it has killed well into the hundreds of whitetail.

I wish I still had my model 99; I'll be in the market for one in .308 as soon as I can be. I never gave much thought to the .243, but I'd bet it'll be a nice shooter.

My grandpa gave me his 99E in 308 6 years ago. It is my LEAST favorite to shoot at the range so I put on a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad and it's not too bad now. I took my best whitetail at the time with it that year. 2 years ago my dad gave me his 99 in 250-3000 (now called the 250 savage) with a tang sight and took a nice antelope with it that year. 99's are pretty collectible and I've enjoyed both of mine. Good luck with yours and post some pics of your first kill with it!

Texasdude28, That's the exact hog setup I'm planning for. Iron sights on a .308 99. The only reason that I'm not using my bolt gun is because I'm gonna handload for the 99 with 220gr. Nosler partition. so I'll have a dedicated rifle for each. (I know it may sound like overkill, but that's the idea -- gotta have a little fun you know. ha ha)
Hope you waste some pigs.

Had a Savage 99 in the 250-300. OK gun, nothing spectacular. Seems they are getting a tad high on the prices.
