Has anyone used it in the hill country,(mountain home area)? And how well does it work?

doesn't work, almost like a get rich quick scheme, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

I know you didn't ask about north texas, but I tried some last year around Bonhad and it worked well. I waited for it to rain, then put it down and fenced it off. Too much trouble though

I looked up the components, rye grass, clover, and rape brasscia. Rye grass and clover should grow in the Hill Country I'm not sure about the rape brasscia. Brasscia's need potassiam and phosphorus which the Hill Country is short of. I think it would need more than throw and it'll grow.

I would mix my own seed mix for that area of clovers (madrid, hubam, yucchi arrowleaf, crimson and/or native burr) and purple top turnips. I you can drag a piece of chainlink or old pipe to disturb the soil it will work better. I would not use rye grass if I could help it, but if I had no other choice then I would. If you time it right you can add some oats to the mix. I would wait till it rained to get the soil really damp then throw the seeds out right before a rain. Your success will improve a lot. If you have livestock then I would consider it a waste of time. (Mid)September is a good rainfall month in that area and cooler temps. I have done a mix of madrid clover and turnips around feeders and in food plots in Kendall County with success on wet years. Phosphorus is not always missing in certain pockets. Potash can be good or bad, mostly bad.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by throw and grow, but I assume seed mix no kill off, tilling, or planting. That's what we're doing this year in Kansas because of the drought. we would love beans, but takes more water and beans will be gone by season. we're doing radish, turnips, rape, cereal rye, and beans. biologist said it will be great.

Most ryegrass has little nutritional value. There are a few newer varieties that are better than the older ones. It grows on concrete but when animals are given a choice they choose something else. Cereal Rye, Oats, Barley or Wheat are much better choices.

and your paying more money for a name...go to co-op or other feed store and buy what you want to plant in seperate bags and not mixes...alot of mixes put names of realy good seed on their product but if you look that seed will only be about 3%-5% of the mix...along with a few other 3% or so of good seed..then they just fill the rest of the bag with something like rye and mark up the price...

Thanks, the reason I asked about rye grass was that a Texas A&M bioloigist had suggested that as one of the seeds to plant when I asked about planting after a fire last fall had destroyed trees and vegetation on the lease. He also mentioned oats and wheat for East Texas.

I would think that the recommendation of rye after the fire was to establish a ground cover and stabilize the soil. Eroded land make poor habitat so I'm sure that protecting the soil was foremost in the biologists mind.

Another thing about "new" land for food plots in the hill country is they do very well with minimum fertilizer since they have only had native vegetation on them. You can get buy with and 18-11-5 or if you like a 13-13-13 the first year. Then do a soil test after the first of the year.
GHale where you are at should be great cool season native grass country. It should have Texas Winter grass and Rescue grass in normal years. Rye Grass makes excellent ground cover but it is like anything else after the fire it needs to be planted fall and needs rain. To much and it can wash off.

I read this all the time on lack of nutritional value of rye seed grass but they eat the heck out of the 100lbs or so I put out. Keep it pinched off 1/2" from the dirt. If it were not as good or better than the browse around, wouldn't they go to the more nutritional food?

It might be the only green thing around that is palatable and they can reach. Not saying they will not eat young tender ryegrass but is just not very high in protein.

Threw out the Shot Plot last fall. It rained the next day and came up suprisingly good. Didn't till, just found a spot that was thin with grass and hand spread. Then pray for rain!

Here's an information page on rye grass varieties. There are a few varieties that can be used for forage but the page specifically warns against useing non forage varieties for forage. http://www.ryegrasses.com/varieties/index.html

For Texas you will want to look to the West Coast Ryegrass varieties. I worked for a very large seed and grain dealer and we sold this seed company variety in the early 2000's when I was there. Deer and cattle really utilized it very well and it did extremely well in the Hill Country soils by hand spreading. It is more expensive the Gulf Rye by quite a bit.
