A pair of ducks came and landed in a tree near me as I was watering the horses last night. They were odd looking for ducks, long necked and long legged. After I got in the house I researched on the internet and found out they were a pair of black bellied whistling ducks. I live in central Texas and haven't never seen this type before. I have been noticing they have been hanging around a grove of oak tree's on our place but yesterday was the first time I have seen them up close.

It was interesting to read about them and I am guessing they have a nest in one of our hollow trees. I don't think they are common to our area from what I could find. what say you experts?

The Black-bellied Whistling Duck or Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis), formerly also called Black-bellied Tree Duck, is a whistling duck that breeds from the southernmost United States and tropical Central to south-central South America. In the USA, it can be found year-round in parts of southeast Texas, and seasonally in southeast Arizona, and Louisiana's Gulf Coast. It is a rare breeder in such disparate locations as Florida, Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina.

It is widely known as pijije (also pixixi or pichichi), chiriría or sirirí in Latin America, though this can also refer to other whistling-ducks and a qualifyer such as ala blanca or aliblanco ("white-winged") is usually added to signify this species. In Mexico, it is also called pato maízal ("cornfield duck") due to its habit of visiting such fields after harvest. And since it is one of only two whistling-duck species native to North America, it is occasionally just known as the "whistling duck" in the southern USA.

The Black-bellied Whistling Duck is an unusual species among North American waterfowl. With its long legs, peculiar appearance and odd habits, it was described by one early American ornithologist[who?] as "most un-duck-like". Its numbers are increasing in North America.

Plenty of them down here in South Texas but it seems they are slowly migrating further and further north each year. They are generally gone by November and it is my understanding they only migrate as far as Mexico during the winter hence the nickname "Mexican Whistlers".. Just my experience with them, I am sure there are more veteran Duck hunters with better information on them..

I have seen two pair this summer, last year we had one pair. Nice to see they are hanging around here.

That's cool. Nice pic. Kind of looks like a baseball diamond.

During big duck season...but you won't see during the regular season. In Sept we see then during teal season but you can't shoot them then. They go far south in time for big duck.

I hunted at the coast with five others when a group of eight flew over low and wing to wing. I was hunting on the opposite side that they approached. (always seems to happen hammer) One of the guys yelled take'm and the first three guys dropped all eight and I never fired a shot. Watching all eight fold was awesome. I felt kind of sorry for the dumb bastards.

We have some over here in north Louisiana during the Spring and Summer, but they are gone to the marsh down south come Sept. I see them when I'm turkey hunting in north or south Texas during the Spring.

"my Dove feeding area"

I thought I handled the boat & trailer thread well but this is getting out of hand

Full blown jealously and envy setting in here

Back on topic, these guys show up regular at the tree farm in east tx but in smaller numbers and not always in season

Undocumented Whislers. We have them at Fork. Some are resident. They will nest in the wood dock boxes after the wood ducks.

Had a couple pair raise clutches this year in a city park. Lots in the gravel pits of Beltline and MacArthur in S Irving. Can't miss the call!
