I'm still in the process of training my first bird dog so I'm not an expert but I got the book "Tom Dokken's Retriever Training" and it has helped me out a lot. It gives a good walk through for every stage of training. I'm sure there are a lot of other good books out there as well.

Congrats on the new pup! Awesome undertaking for a young man or woman - kudos to you!

I always recommend Water Dog (or any of Wolter's books, for that matter) for folks giving this their first shot. Very simple approach, easy to follow and nothing too complex. If you jump into some advanced things right off the bat, you could find yourself in over your head or making errors that could impede progress or even drive. Sometimes plain, simple & proven is all that's needed.

Water dog book and Chris Akin's Duck Dog Basics are what I use. Good luck
