I have been researching public places to hunt on TPWD website and it seems to be the most productive in the northern half of the state. I have never hunted public for quail and I might start at Matador. Do you guys have any suggestions on where to go as I understand it is like 28k acers. I do have a young female brittany and this will be her first year. Do you guys know what the percentage of Bobwhite to blues are. I know blues will run her to death. Thanks for all the help guys.

I have been on it several times and it is NEVER the same. It depends on how much stock has grazed it and how much rainfall for the year. Ive seen it like a desert and to wet to get across the small stream that runs through it. It always has Plenty of sandburrs. You might call them and ask about the range situation. The west half of it will usually take a four wheel drive to get to the back part.

Gonna have to agree. I hunted there a lot a few years back. We just drove the roads and when we saw a spot we liked we unloaded the dogs and hunted around for a while and the loaded up and went a little further on down the road. I really enjoyed hunting there. Very pretty place. Saw a ton of wildlife and one of the biggest deer I have ever seen.

The last time I hunted up there was for Feral Hog. They have a couple of management deer hunts up there this fall, so you will need to call and check as to when those are. Yes it is 28,000+ acres and there are some blues, but they really manage it for the bob's. Really beautiful country up there, you will see lots of whitetails and muley's. Good Luck if you go.

Lumberjack, I've got a place that borders the Matador WMA on its east side. I've had the place for about 5 years now and have never seen a blue. But we're covered up in bob's. They've had pretty good rain out there for the last few months. I was up there two weekends ago and everything looked good, very green. Hope this helps.

Lumberjack, I am going up there next week to hunt on one of the draw hunts for deer. I will let you know what the quail situation looks like after I get back.
If you have any specific questions email me. I also have the email address to one of the people at the WMA.

I hunted it a couple of times last year & never saw a blue. Seems like they had a sign up stating that you could not shoot blues.
Lots of different type of terrain available to hunt. I never had to to use 4wd, but I was glad I had it. It was dry when I went but I can think of some places. I would not want to attempt while muddy, even with 4wd.
Can't wait to get out there & and chase some quail. 12 more days & counting.

If you plan on hunting at Matador be sure you bring procetion for man & beast. Grass burrs, prickly pear & mesquites sure makes for tough hunting. Of course some areas are better than others & some places its hard to take a step w/o stepping on prickly pears.
