This afternoon I was (unfortunately) fixing downed fence in a remote and hard to reach wooded tangle on the back of our place. There's a creek back there that's dry most of the time and I was walking down the creek bed to get to where the fence was down. The creek bank in most places back there is 5 or 6 feet high, so the good news is that it's easy to walk in the creek bottom but the bad news is that you'll eventually have to climb out. There were quite a few big holes dug into the creek bank. I'll say the holes were about volleyball sized and a couple were bigger. They looked a good bit bigger than most armadillo holes would be and I've never seen a dillo hole high up in a creek bank. So whadddayathink dug them? Could it be coyotes digging dens for pups? If you guys can't tell me what dug them, I'll put a game camera back there.

Anything anyone here says would simply be speculation. I'd go ahead and throw up a camera. Then you can post them; I know I am curious.

You guys are not much help. I guess I'll stick a camera or two back in that area. I guess when I was back in that area I could've at least looked for tracks. Duh! But, I was in fence fixing mode.

I know that it isn't nutria or Bilbo Baggins. Maybe it could be foxes, but it'd have to have a lot of foxes to have dug that many holes. Must be 5 to 8 actual holes. I've had this place for 8 or 9 years and this is the first time there have been holes in the creek bank. Yup, I'll put a camera back there.

I wouldn't rule out bilbo baggins. They are sneaky little fellers.

I once found where coyotes had burrowed a den into the dirt mound left by an over-turned tree and its roots. The holes were about the size you described.

Ok...right now I'm going to take a camera back there and set it up. I'm thinking that it must be coyotes, though foxes could be a possibility. And I suppose, due to overwhelming suggestions from ya'll, that just maybe it could be Bilbo Baggins. With luck, and if I pick the right hole to put the camera in front of, we'll soon know.

Turtles will sometimes bury into banks when water is high.

Too little information, leads to too much speculation!

The camera is in place. Just for info, there isn't a pond or tank within 150 yards of this dry creek. I just don't think that it's nutria or beaver. I'd have seen signs of them. I hadn't thought of skunks or possums doing the digging. It could maybe be armadillos, but the wall is nearly vertical and the holes are 3 or 4 feet above the bottom of the dry creek. I've never seen a badger around these parts and I don't have any game camera shots of badgers or foxes. Plenty of Coyote and bobcat pictures. Has anyone ever seen armadillos dig holes high up on a creek wall? I never have, but that doesn't mean that it's not possible.

Ive seen lots of coyote dens in dry creeks, usually an entrance in the creek bank and an exit up on top.
