When my dad was growing up in the 50s and 60s there where tons of quail in East Texas. We all know the population is all but gone. My question for you is:
When was the last time you saw wild quail in East Texas and, do you think it is possible for them to return?
In the fall of 1997 I personally saw a small covey (6 birds) flush from a fence row while I was cutting hay. They were on Lone Star Church Road in Nacogdoches Co.
In around 1991 I saw a mother with several little ones running in the middle of a dirt road in the Seed Tick Community in South East Nacogdoches Co.
These are the only quail I have ever seen. About 5 years ago, I was on a piece of property very close to where I saw the hen and chicks and I heard a lone quail calling but never saw it.

The last quail that I hunted here in northeast Texas was in 1985.
Would still see a few every once in a while until around 95 or 96 and it seemed they were completely gone.
I saw 2 quail crossing the road a few months ago. I couldn't believe it.

In 2007 and 2008 I saw and heard quail around negley, tx (Red River county) in a 20 yr old 2nd thinned pine plantation.
In 2008 saw some just north of I-30 near the sulphur river every day for 2 weeks around White oak creek wma.
In 2008 jumped a covey in Davy Crockett National Forest while wood [censored] hunting near Kennard.
In 2008 jumped a covey in Angelina national forest woodcock hunting near Broaddus.

sounds bleak. I haven't hunted East Texas since the '60s. We had lots of quail then. Makes me sick to my stomach to think that they're all gone!

I was reared in Alto, but the family ranch and farms were in Forest which is So. 10 miles toward Lufkin..Dad was a bird hunter only and he said all of East Tx orig. had many quail when the familys all had gardens..we used to have 3 coveys behind Grandpa Millers house in his garden..fire ants, predators..mainly housecats...all have taken a toll...I remember seeing Woodcock in a swampy area on the hwy So of Liberty toward Anuahc..*spelling error..in the 50's..but never saw any around the farm or in any of the Nat'l Forests there..and I hunted them alot when I was a kid..DD
