Hell of a collection stxr! What county?
I know down in LaSalle County on the ranches I've worked on it was not uncommon at all to kill 5 or more in a given weekend and VERY FEW were under 4 1/2' long! You might go a month or two without seeing them but come late Sept or early Oct the SOBs would come out bigtime!
I thought that purhaps why we hardly ever killed a small one might be due to the high number of Blue Indigos in the area. I've seen as many as 10 Indigos in a day down there and have seen them as big as 8'+ easily! Figured maybe they ate all the small rattlebugs and left only the big papas! Indigo's help and Roadrunners like them also.

Must have water. I think killer should do a turkey hunt there. Snakes were there before we added more water due to the amount of rat dens and pricky pear. He would be SOL for a turkey hunt since I only saw turkey on 2 times and one day only each time. No turkeys is okay; kind of like a snipe hunt, just send him out to round up snakes.

You ever bust 'em open and see what's inside 'em? A few times. I killed on in the 70's that had an undigested young jackrabbit inside. That was the biggest snake I have ever killed and it was 6'6" long. Found cottontails, rats, mice etc in them.

One is added everytime the shed their skin I believe.

It was in eastern La Salle. We had lots of Blue Indigos and a few Bull snakes. I think they had some effect on the smaller ones but I think hogs did also. I also saw Caracara carrying Coachwhips up in the air flying away with them. I would think they ate the little ones also. Yup, that area has some big ones! I've heard that hogs will eat them but have never seen it. I even got an email a while back that stated rattlesnakes are rattling less due to the fact that hogs are feasting on them. I don't buy that one though. Hell, I've seen them buzz at me from 50'+ away while driving down the road still and have stepped on one that never rattled near 40 years ago. I think it has a lot to do with the weather and how active they are as well as how hungry they are or are not rather than hogs eating them! Hey stxr, my grandparents had a 200+ acre farm adjacent IH-10 between Seguin and San Antonio that had some big gravel pits on it where they took gravel out to build the highway. There were some rock piles with giant rocks stacked up by those pits. We killed some absolute giants out of those rock piles growing up. Used to shove a hose as deep down in those piles as we could and gas them out. Damn those snakes were pissed off when they came out of the rocks!
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I hunt south of Abilene and have noticed that none of the rattlesnakes I have come across have actually "rattled" I asked some locals and they say it's an adaptation to defend against all the wild pigs out there.
Anything to this?
