Well maybe next year, around March, when it's not too hot to drink beer or walk 40 yards to hang paper, we'll try it again at 40 yards. For grins and educational purposes. I still have the paper and the staple gun. I bet the wafer board will still be handy.

with long 28" and longer broomsticks the pattern at 20 yards will be relatively tight, no matter what you shoot (high brass loads, especially with 3" shells). Dove loads (#8) start to show spread faster. Try 30 yards plus to see difference.
I was patterning my boomstick with #7.5 and #8 shots. At about 15 yards virtually no difference. Started to see visible choke induced difference after 20 yards

Firearms and alcohol... good job Mr. Moderator... But did I mention Garrett didn't want to walk that far to hang paper? And did I mention our beers were getting hot?

Awesome post Dave....so what did we learn here fellas?
I can tell you one thing if I was a mod I'd kick both Dave and Garrett off and then probably myself if I didn't shape up.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Worthless huh? How much money is that worthless little outing gonna save you next time you buy shells?
In my case it's about $110 bucks a year to buy Federal and not Kent. It's about $200 a year to abstain from black cloud or the like.

patterning your shotgun: a complete and utter waste of time
The more I think about it, the more I can't believe a MODERATOR posted this.
Really? What difference does it make? Moderators are to keep the peace and help members having troubles not to make sure everyone has the same opinion. To me, a MODERATOR is kinda like the "role model",...someone to be respected,.....someone that (hopefully) gives a good response/advice to any given question asked. Well look, I was being a role model, TPWD said pattern your shotgun, the internet said pattern your shotgun, so I did. It made no difference at the ranges I shoot ducks at. I was kind of curious what everyone would say about it or I wouldn't have posted up here. This really went down just like I said it did. I even did drink exactly one beer while doing it. Oh, I definitely had a few more later but not while there was actual shooting going on. I did wonder after we pulled sheet after sheet down and compared them if more distance would affect it more. I mean, since the pellets come out of the gun and go downrange in a cone shape... it stands to reason that the farther away the wider the pattern. I'm curious though, if the pattern was basically even at 20 yards, shouldn't it also be basically even at 40 yards? I mean, more space between pellet. Maybe we'll get out there early while it's still only in the 80's in the morning and try again @ 40. But there is a good chance it won't happen until next spring when the weather is nice. I usually don't get up early in the off season

Well since we are being serious then, patterning a gun does not just tell you one thing. It carries a host of information. It can indicate problems in patterns. Some shells don't do well with some guns and vice versa.
Some speeds are not good for some chokes. Sometimes the general pattern is not going where you think it is going.
Case and point. I bought a Beretta Pintail. Friend loved it and bought one too. Did not pattern it and could not hit a thing. Friend was very frustrated. I told him over and over to pattern it. Following season we pattern it. At 20 yards the general pattern was 2 feet low and 2 feet right. We fixed it by redneck engineering an after market glow sight. i wish I hadn't of done that as he is a contender. I got a lot of miles of cackling at him that first year.

Mr Speer, Good effort at CYA, but I don't buy it. I just hope no one reads this post and thinks "they" don't have to pattern their gun for optimal results. One more question: do you know what you are looking for (on paper, pattern wise) to cleanly/eficiantly kill ducks???

I only water swat ducks.... so truely there is no reason to pattern my gun! I only shoot decoying ducks as well, but still patterned my gun at 30 yards. Made a huge difference and I found the best pattern at that range. If you get them into 20 before you shoot at them, your 3rd shot will still be 30 out I'd imagine. Try it again at 30
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

For some information, I patterned my wingmaster recently. Black Cloud and Kent Faststeel patterned the best for me with a mod choke. Going with 3'' #3s.

I let D Speer shoot the decoying ducks and I shoot passing ducks. Makes who shot which duck easy to figure out. Although I almost shot the duck that was trying to land on Dave's feet one morning. I have to agree that at 2o yards there should not be much difference between shells. 30-40 yard(where I shoot) there is a difference.

I've never patterned my gun. But, I can tell it's okay by the splash while swatting 'em.
