what is the story with the north texas deer herd? i googled a bit and really couldnt find anything about the re-introduction/release, whatever it was called....when did TP&W release deer up here and were they south texas deer or kansas deer, i have heard both. were there areas that they focused on more than others?
reason i ask, i just talked to an "old" landowner in north hunt county about hunting his property, its family only, and he was saying that he hasnt really even let his family hunt because he doesnt feel like the herd in the area have reached their potential, even though i thought all of this took place in the late 80's to early 90's. he was saying that a lot of the deer died off pretty quickly after they were released but have bounced back a bit in the last 5 to 10 years. now i dont know him from Adam, so have no idea about the credibility of what he says.
i was just curious to see if there was any info anywhere about this. i have lived here, hunt/rockwall county, my whole life, and grew up seeing deer all the time, but i was just coming into hunting consciousness in the early 90's so i guess i missed all this.
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

So many stories about deer releases, but never read on article about it. Most the deer in north and east texas died due to lack of habitat and food. A lot were killed by the oil field workers during the early oil booms for food.

Not sure about deer being released in north Texas myself. I've heard there was a huge high fence operation just north of lavon a guy couldn't manage anymore and cut the fence. Don't know if there was any truth behind it or not. But from what I understand it was the farming and farmers that did away with the deer in north Texas in the 60 and 70s. If u think about farming takes away cover but leaves plenty of grocerys and deer are ok. But if they have food and no where to go it makes a really easy Target for man and other predators. In my oppinion and from what I've heard from the old timers the deer number were cut down tremendously, but with a lot of farming gone and places growing back up the deer numbers are to.
Aim small, miss small.

Deer were released in Hunt,Kaufman and Rockwall counties in the late 70s.I can't remember the ranchers name, but I do remember seeing the release on TV and reading about it in Texas Sportsman magazine. Not sure if TPWD was involved or not. Anyway they're out there and have been for 30 years or more.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.
