Just curious, I know squirrels will eat on them and squirrels and hogs seems to enjoy many of the same foods.

If a place does not have bois darc trees on it I certianly would not haul any of the horse apples out for bait though. Unless you are making a homemade long bow they are not much use as a tree IMO

At my place, I have acorns, pecans, horseapples, persimmons, and pears. The one pear tree I have drops a bunch of pears and I have been surprised by the lack of interest in the pears by the animals. A couple horseapple trees are nearby I can't say that I have ever seen hog or deer tracks anywhere around them. I sure do hate hitting the horseappls with my brush hog, however.

In looking at the scat, persimmons seem to be the prized fruit at my place.

So if hogs do eat horseapplies, then maybe it would not be a bad idea to collect a bunch myself and move them over to use as bait where we hunt, yes?

We have family place in Cooke Co north of Lake Ray Roberts, lot of timber and pasture and some acres in cultivation. Heavy pecan, oak, walnut, persimmon, Bois D'arc, etc. Bois D'arc has long history in this area, one of the places where it is native, and makes attractive wood for knives & handguns, hard as heck, called ironwood or orange osage, pioneers used it for piers in homes and excellent for fence posts. Pioneers actually valued it for fencing, plant it thick enough and cattle will not go through it. Many people don't know that Bois D'arc fruit (horseapples) actually has a substance very similar to DEET and will repel many bugs. About the best use I ever got from it was as targets, throw one out and start shooting. Deer & turkey are not attracted by them, at least to my knowledge, but squirrels go after the seeds. Would like to hear more comments about what is normally thought of as a "trash tree". Would take about 5 minutes to fill a pickup bed with these if they could be used for bait.

The land I hunt on with my in-laws up in Nebraska has them all over the place. They call them hedge apples up there. The deer don't eat them but they tell me that a lot of folks do/have taken them home and tossed them up in their
attics/closets/sheds/barns/whatever because supposedly they repel bugs. Don't know if they really work or not but that's what they say.

Horse apples(Bois D'arc, pronounced..."bo-dark") have a naturally high concentration of boron. Coupled with the citric acid(as opposed to nitric acid) it acts in the same manner as Boric Acid would. They have long been used for natural pest control around structures when sliced into wafers and placed in mulch beds. It gives the fruit a bitter taste, and therefore it is not eaten by too many things.
The wood also contains enough of the boron to deter a lot of pests and a lot of different organisms, including fungi, that would normally decay most other species of wood. It doesn't make the wood last forever, but will prolong it's usable life by not having it's structural integrity compromised by wood destroying organisms.

Thinking about taking some to NYC and selling them as Python Eggs or Alien Seed Pods. The year I took the Sweet Gum burrs and sold them as porcupine eggs I did pretty well.

One place I hog hunt has a bois d'arc tree and we always find horseapples shredded to pieces. It could be squirrels or coons, but due to the ammount I tend to believe it's hogs, but I haven't actually seen them eating the apples. We throw alot of bread, corn and other attractants that would probably present a better choice, but I don't believe there is anything a pig won't eat.

I was out at the farm mowing pasture and noticed the trees are starting to drop the "apples". If anyone wants some send me a PM and I will try to arrange a suitable time to meet(we keep the property locked). Lot of folk have different things they have done or had friends do with them and Bois D'Arc is an interesting tree.

I've been around 'horseapple' trees all my life and I have never seen any critter eat a horseapple. But...having said that, I will admit that there were no wild hogs where I grew up. Maybe hogs will eat em.
