I'm new, as previous thread stated, to bow hunting. Can someone explain to me the difference in broadheads as far as weight and speed is concerned. I understang mech vs fixed but all is latin to me at this time. Same with arrows. Or, if there is a link or sticky on this forum with this info please let me know.

Your weight of your broadhead is going to slow down your arrow the more you go up in grains...the trade off for this is that you are going to trade that off for penetration and Kenetic energy. Mechanical blades open on contact of the animal whers fixed are already open and cut on contact. Arrows are a totally different subject...you have skinny, fat, high priced, low priced, junk, great, so on and so forth. My personal favorite arrow is the easton axis for the HIT insert and the slimline technology helping with having a smaller diameter to fight wind drift. I know this is just a small bit of info but without knowing exactly what you want, I could write a BOOK without even getting close to what you are searching for!!

Thanks for the response. I realize it's a broad topic, some pun intended, but that was what I was looking for just the bare bone basics. I have a long way to go. My plan is to go shoot some bows this Saturday to see what I like and get started on my journey.

Sounds like you dont even have a bow yet. What you get is going to have a lot to do with arrow selection. And arrow size can affect point/broadhead selection. So first things first is my recommendation. But to add to what is stated above, arrowhead weight should be matched to the arrow as it can affect the spine/overall stiffness and the balance point of the arrow which in turn can have an effect on the quality of flight.

You are correct. Going to Santa Fe Archery this Saturday to test shoot some bows. I want to get familiar with terms and what to look for and what to stay away from. I don't want to be sold a bag of goods if you know what I mean.

Watching hunting shows will spark the interest...which is good thing! But ignore the paid adds on tv,they pay for a reason! Choices for bows is like outfitting a hunting truck,so many options and something for everyone.Your going to spend money on what sounds great and respend money on what works for you.Have fun on the journey...we all have! cheers

Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock!

I would look for a good cut on contact broadhead if your trying to keep things simple while starting out. Mechanicals can be annoying to get to work properly, and its just one more thing which you have to worry about which is not always a good thing when your new to a sport.

I plan on using fixed only. More moving parts means more chance of failure.

Muzzy's, Magnus stingers, and slick tricks would all be a good place to start.

I've been cruising threads here and at TBH, still waiting for my mod approval, and those brands pop up quite frequently. Thank you.

Once you've selected your bow, you'll used your draw length, poundage, etc to help determine which arrows "fit" your rig best. There are charts available from Easton and elsewhere to give you a start. Good luck, and welcome to the fun.
