I had a lease in Olney last year. There is a decent population of deer and dove in that area. The ducks were not that good last year in Olney. Where is your lease or land you are looking at?

Not to good most deer are noctornal due hunting pressure, dove hunting could be pretty good if you have food source.

Like a lot of Young county close to the metromess, the deer tend to be on the nocturnal side due to hunting pressure. I also understand there's a bit more groceries, cultivation out that way so the deer don't hit the feeders quite as much as other areas in Young county. On the flip side, the bodies tend to benefit from those groceries.

I have some friends that have said the deer that are around there can be really nice, just not as much cover in that part of the county as further south and west.

+1 and yes, they are VERY nocturnal. The best deer on our game cams were after shooting hours.

Stuko, sounds like you've been hunting out that way for awhile. As a fellow Young county hunter the past 4 years, I'd like to know if you've had any success getting them to not be so nocturnal. At my place near Murray, they move decently in the mornings and early evenings for most of October and the first couple of weeks during rifle season but at about Thanksgiving, the "switch" flips and they go almost exclusively nocturnal. This pattern seems to be almost universal for the county based on multiple hunters I've talked to over the past 4 years.

You will never get them to change their pattern, been that way for many years, due to the small track leases and over pressure of hunters. Your only chance for a legal buck, maybe rut. I would find another lease if I were you, your probably throwing away good hard earned money, JMO.

Too late for that dgilbert, I actually bought a small tract property (80 acres) 4 years ago. As you say, I harvested my only buck (9pt., 16", 3.5 years old) during the rut 2 years ago. It was fun to rattle him out but opportunities to take another nice one have been slim at best. If I could hunt nights, I'd have a chance nearly every night to take a decent one. I solely hunt the property.

Don't worry, I didn't take it that way at all. I totally agree about the over proliferation of hunters, mainly due to proximity to metromess. I guess that's what also drew me to purchasing out there. Just wish the deer were not so wyly and scared into going nocturnal so early in season.

Couldnt have said it better myself. If you are lucky, the 1st 2 weeks of rifle season you "should" get a shot at a decent buck. After that, they are "almost" all nocturnal. Its exactly like the flip of a switch.

If you aren't already, have you thought about bow season? Maybe get a head start on the rifle season?

If you aren't good with bow, cross bow is now legal for bow season. I know cross bows and all is expensive, but if you got the $$, its an option.

There were lots of turkeys and quite a few hogs when I hunted around Olney. Didn't see too many deer. Nocturnal is my vote. Seen some deer during bow seasons.
