JUst curious how many of you use WD-40 on your guns. I have heard it both ways --- bad and good. I kinda treat it as a solvent because it dries. I never use it for a rust preventative. How about you ?

NO, I dont use WD-40 on my guns!!
It would not bother me to wipe my gun down with WD-40, but I will not use it on the working parts!!

Water Displacement!!!!!. Its a decent cleaner but a terrible Lubricater and Protector/Inhibitor. If you have an older model vehicle with the old distributor cap it works wonders for getting water out of those.

WD-40 will gum up in your working parts.
There's lubes made specifically for guns.

If I soak the gun with water, I soak it with WD-40. When its dry I use the Gun Scrubber and the Rem Oil. It has it's purpose and used within that purpose it does fine. Don't do the whole job and you'll regret it.

WD 40 is better than nothing, but about the same as water...

I only use it if I don't have anything else. Of course I've even used a little 10w-30 in a crunch.
Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

What's worse than using WD-40 is letting it get soaked into a gun case. It'll make the moisture move to the surface of the case and will sit right next to your gun.
There's a lot of commercial alternatives. If you're trying to stay on the cheap, mix up a gallon of Ed's Red and it will last you a long time. It is certainly not the best for dissolving crud, but it is a safe primum non nocere fluid.
google "ed's red" for a recipe.

Use a good quality light gun oil in place of WD-40. Spray on Rem-Oil, for instance is a much better substitute. For sliding or other mechanical parts, I use a drop of a light machine oil. Do not get oil on wood stocks as it will soften the wood over time.
Nothing hunts like a Spring Gobbler.

I've fixed many a thing with WD40, a roll of duct tape and some baling wire, but never on a firearm. RemOil is my friend.
He is your friend defender your dog. Be worthy of such devotion
