Hello all, Here's a new one just off the bench. It's 8 3/8" long with a 4 1/8" blade. Coke bottle style handle is green canvas micarta. Steel is 1/8" 1084 carbon steel. Hope you like it. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the nice compliments gentlemen, I appreciate them. Blackblue, I try to keep them very reasonable (especially for THF members - great guys all). This one I'll list for $130 + shipping.
Thanks all for looking and commenting.

looks good, though I never could make myself bother to put a mirror finish on a carbon steel blade, knowing it will never stay pretty. That said, 1084 is pretty much my steel of choice.

Travis, you're right. Carbon steel blades don't stay pretty. I do like to think that the polished blade offers a bit more rust and stain resistance - at least until the blade has a fair amount of use on it.

That natural patina that carbon blades get with time just adds to the character. D2 is a bear to polish but stays that way longer than most other carbon steels it seems to me anyway.

I agree with both of these thoughts, though I've never been able to get D2 up to mirror. Carbides are too big, I think. Anyway, I sincerely hope that my comment about mirror finishes wasn't taken as any sort of negative criticism. It always looks good for as long as it lasts, and I'm well familiar with the considerable effort it takes to achieve. If you can pull it off, you have my respect. I'm too much of a pragmatist to make the effort to get anything that shiny (except bolsters) unless I'm pretty sure it'll be a safe queen, or unless I'm feeling frisky. It does happen. REally. You may be right about the extra stain resistance--if nothing else water slides off easier. IT might even help a knife slice better because there is less friction. Something to think about... The oxides will eventually provide additional rust protection, so even though it won't stay pretty, it will stay sharp and, with proper care, unrusted. And there's really no stainless out there that will perform better than good old 1084, IMO.

As it turns out, the plan is for this one to be a safe queen for the next several years of its life. Regular maintance (and occasional fondling) will be what it knows for a childhood. However, the wife is looking at this one for the kitchen, so the story is not set...
