Shot a small 50 pound pig tonight using a grim reaper 100 grain. It was a 30 yard broadside/ slight quartering away shot. Placement was fine upon impact. Found okay blood and expected a dead pig within 30 yards of searching, but the blood trail, though sparse, kept going and going. 60 yards from impact I found my arrow with blood on the vanes, one tattered and nearly severed off. All three blades were closed and appeared that they never opened. I continued blood trailing another 400 yards and it became thinner and thinner until I only found a few drops in the last 50 feet without any indication which way the pig turned. I worked my butt off trying to find this pig, but all to no avail. So basically it seems like I wounded this pig with a glorified field point. This is 2 for 2 grim reapers have failed me.

same thing happened to a buddy, nothing but fixed blades for me.

Wow,first that I have heard fo GR's failing but then again, I dont shoot them.

I know 7 people that hunt with them for the last 2 years, without one failure. Maybe you got a bad pack.

Even the best ones can fail. Fixed blades have a much lower failure to function rate.

If it can go wrong it will at some time go wrong. Fixed blades for me

If it was a pass through then there is a good chance that the blades closed on them selves. I though the same thing the first time I shot one into a foam block target, but after looking at the entrance and exit I realizedd that they did open but closed after the broadhead made it though the target.

If it is any mechanical, you have a chance of failure, it does matter who makes it, JMO.

Once it hits the ground the force typically closes them

Guys, guys guys.... Listen to me; if your broadheads have moving parts they are subject to fail!!! Been there, done that!

I studied this thing with a magnifying glass...literally...the blades never opened. If you can remember back, I had a post months ago where I was concerned this could happen because I felt the blades required too much force to deploy and were not smooth in their motion. I even brought my concerns to my local proshop who told me rest assured that they are fine and will open upon impact. Nonetheless, they failed me on this pig. I had an attraction to GR tips after hearing so much praise from the archery community about their dead nuts reliability, accuracy, and massive wound channels they inflict. I am not bashing the product, as I have only shot two pigs with them and have very little experience with their terminal performance, but from the experiences I have had I will be sticking with the fixed blades that have already proven their effectiveness for me from here out.

Interesting, Totally different exeperience here. Couple of questions.

1. Did you install them with the blades open. I could see where they could possibly get in a bind if you installed them with the blades closed.
2. Are you shooting the 1-3/8"? If not and your shooting the larger heads, what is your poundage on your bow. The big reaper, don't like bows under 70#.

Now I am getting nervous about them, like I said everybody on the hunting ProStaff I am one uses them, with no problems. However, I was leary about trying mechanicals anyways and only went with the GR after hearing their praises. I am hoping you just got a bad batch, I would definitely call them. May have to do some pig testing, although I normally use fixed for them.

i would guess that that they opened and closed as the arrow fell out I have killed dozens of pigs and 8 deer with grim reapers and never had a problem with the 1 3/8 or the 1 3/4 not opening that being said i would have a problem with them coming open in flight and altering the arrow flight.

Do I need to tell everyone about our hunting trip and you and the septic tank?

HWY_MAN makes some bad a$$ flint heads. It's a neat thing to watch him work on them.

Chuck I took them out of the package and screwed them in the inserts with te split ring and base alignment confirmed. I manually heckled the tension of each blade before this hunt and all seemed ok. Secondly I noted there to be pig tissue in these slots after the shot...possibly that hindered them opening? Lastly I used a mag glass and could not find the slightest micro knock that occurs when a razor edge impacts an animal. Also, there was no blood smear glazed on the cutting surface of the blades that were in their protected slots as there was the rest of the BH and arrow shaft. I really don't think they opened.
