Anyone ever hunted public land in Colorado for pheasant or quail? I've been looking at Eastern Colorado and found out they have a pretty healthy population of both birds in some areas. Just wondering in anyone could give me a heads up.

I was up there several years ago at a field trial near Longmont for 10 days. Several of the local bird dog people who lived in Colorado were there. None of them mentioned hunting in Colorado. Several had planned trips to Kansas, or Texas.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

I've hunted the south east conner of CO. A lot..But mostly private....the area is very similar to Oklahoma, TX, and Kansas. All the high plains region is very water dependent.
The key to pheasants in that region is ag with crp buffers

I hunted Blaze with another Vizsla for a couple of days in north central Kansas with a man and his son from Colorado. They said they came to Kansas every year instead of hunting the home state because the hunting was so much better in Kansas.
But at the same time I often had Kansas residents tell me they go to Nebraska or South Dakota to do their serious pheasant hunting.
So I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. Things are really dependent on the timing of weather patterns, agriculture, game cycles, and the like. Like anywhere else with these birds I am sure there are years that eastern Colorado is the bomb and years it is not.

I've always heard that eastern Colorado was much like western Ks. and the bird hunting was pretty good. Always wanted to try it but haven't got the chance.

I have family with ranches/land all over eastern Colorado. The hunting has been pretty good over past few years. It is not like Texas...if you know someone in the area you can pretty much hunt where you want to...you just have to let them know.
