If you use real hog panels (I think they are 34" tall), be sure to put a strand of barbed wire around the top. Maybe 6" above the hog panel. It'll help deter the cows from trying to stick their necks over the fence. Once a cow leans over and realizes it can reach the corn on the other side, they will sometimes "crush" a panel down even more. Also, I use 6 panels per feeder pen. the more panels, the better, but 6 seem to do the job nicely. My two cents.

I put up some about a month ago and recently checked up on it and it appears they were able to get into the pen (I am thinking they were able to get under the panels instead of jumping) and I had about 7 total dead pigs inside the pen and 2 complete (1 fresh) carcasses.

Gonna try and put up more "T" posts in the middle of each panel.

Not when the deer dont come in and get any corn because of the hogs. I had nearly 2500 photos over a months time. The last 1000 were pigs only. I am sorry but I like to deer hunt more than pig hunt so to he77 with the hogs smile

OK, I'm about ready to install 2 hog pens at my Oklahoma lease. I have never done it before, so have some basic questions.

How much of the T Post do I want in the ground? If I'm going with 3 foot pen do I want 5 foot? that is the shortest Tractor Supply sells.

Any recommendation on manual post driver?

What other equipment do I need? Just pliers and wires?

I think this is the hog panel I want, no cows to worry about.

http://www.tractorsupply.com/feedlot-panel-hog-16-ft-l-x-34-in-h-3610325

So if its 16 foot do T Posts every 8 foot? How many panels will I need for each feeder?

Thanks!

Rob, yes that is a good hog panel. We put 5' t-posts every 4 feet and drive about a foot and a half into the ground. We have cows on our place, so we make sure our pen is large enough that the corn does not get close to the edges where cows would lean over to get the corn. We usually use 8 (16 ft) panels per pen. In order to get the panels out to the lease we end up cutting the 16 footers in half so they fit nicely on a trailer. TSC will happily cut them for you.

Pigs eat better than deer. They will leave after you shoot at them a while.

ahh, good point. 16 foot won't fit in the truck bed and I don't know if 8' will either this new Tundra with back seat and doors big as the front. smile worse case I have a flatbed car trailer.

128 foot circumference = 20.3 radius. that doesn't sound like a bunch. I'll have to eyeball it first.

I'm also wondering since there are no cows if I can get away with T Posts every 8 foot.

do you do anything fancy to attach pen to T Post besides twisting wire?

I would make it as big as you can afford

25' radius = 157 circumference
30' radius = 188 circumference

But a 16' panel will fit in the bed of a truck. All you do is bend them in a "U" shape and then in the bed of the truck. Nest the next one in the first one and so forth. Then put you tpost in the middle on the bed of truck. I have hauled them like this many times. I put one Tpost at each splice so one for every 16'. Just make sure you have panels touch the ground. Rounds pens are very rigid.

I always use hog panels, the shorter ones. I usually use three t posts per side, but occassionally have had to add a few because the cows started leaning on em

Another nicety is this guy

http://www.gemplers.com/product/M1195/Metal-T-Post-Puller

I bought this for my dad as a gag deal because he was getting older and moving them t posts was getting hard. Turns out it works great and now he wont leave for the lease without it and it came back to bite me in the arse when I was the first one that needed it.

I finished my first one today, went with 8 posts and 8 16' low hog panels (no cows). Radius comes out to little more than 20' and circumference 128'. My feeder shoots corn a long ways and only a few kernels are making it outside. Parts were easier than I expected, others harder. smile I think it came out pretty good. My main concerns now are deer won't want to jump over and hogs will dig under. I still have one more to do. frown

If the circumference is 128', I'll bet the radius is 20' and the diameter is 40'. (Sorry, I are an engineer grin)
