We don't have any gun safes. My sister doesn't care for guns. Whenever my dad leaves out of town, I load the revolver and put it under the pillow. I think that can explain where my family stands...

And don't put a gun under your pillow. That's a quick way to shoot yourself.

Both, but I picked the first one because that was how I was raised. My fathers philosophy was based on the premise that he could protect me at our house, but he would not always be there and everyone doesn't follow the same set of rules. He wanted me to respect guns and what they are capable of doing, but not fear them. By being around guns my whole life, they weren't near as fascinating when I encountered them at friends houses. I have a safe and Joshua has a gun cabinet in his room and has access to all guns. My wife isn't exactly appreciative of how loose I am with guns, but it was how I was raised. I have had access to guns for as long as I can remember. Josh and Haley have been around guns all their lives, it isn't new to them.
Talent is a gift, character is a decision.

Well, like most of us over a certain age,I grew up in a pretty "loose" gun environment also. I was taught to respect guns but they were always open and available around the house.
But,really, was that smart? To me,the answer is clearly "No". Why? Kids are kids. They don't always do what they are told and that's just a fact.Especially for boys, guns are just hard to stay away from. Plus you don't know a thing about other peoples' kids who visit.I would say securing all guns and ammo up until kids are 12 or so is just a common-sense play.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

And,Chital, sleeping with a gun under your pillow is dangerous and highly unnecessary....

Brought my kids up at an early age to respect firearms. Never had them locked up but out of reach when they were small. When they were old enough I took them out to shoot. Never gave either of them a BB gun. I never wanted for either of them to confuse a BB gun with a firearm that could kill. Showed both of them the the results of shooting something and killing it. I always told them dead is dead and you can't bring it back so be careful where you aim and if you point it at anything be prepared to kill it.
Now the kids are grown up and gone. We have loaded guns in three different rooms where we can get to them when/if they are needed. No reason to have a gun in a house for protection that is not loaded and out of reach.
FYI-I grew up in a home where my mother frowned upon guns. There was one gun in the house, over under .22/.410, never loaded always in the back of parents closet.

I taught my kids about guns early but also kept the guns locked up. This My dad did the same thing. Taught me early, but I knew that I couldn't get in the gun cabinet without permission until I was 10.

I guess somebody watched too many silly movies where guns were kept under pillow and pulled on a split second notice. In real life you going to shoot a pillow or your other arm trying to pry/unsnag pillow half asleep. Intruder will die laughing. Wanna keep toy ready - get a bed side holster and a dog to warn you of intruder. Or better yet get a "coach shotgun" = double barrel 12ga pistol.

For those of you who don't secure guns in your home, remember it is against the law to allow access to a gun to a child and you can be charged with a crime, especially if bodily injury results from your negligence to secure the firearm. "IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT, OR ABANDON AN UNSECURED FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN ACCESS TO THE FIREARM." http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/Docs/PE/htm/PE.46.htmSec 46.13 The bottom line is don't be stupid. Be safe and make sure your children and anyone that comes to your house is safe.

i was raised by a single uncle and my grandmother after my dad pasted, i was taught to shoot at a young age and cleaned my dads old model 11 remington he left me for as long as i can remember, my uncles guns were on a rack on the wall his room but as one of the others said i looked but never put a hand on one unsupervised. for fear of whoopin i would get ,when i turned 12 i got a pump 20 guage for my birthday and a 22 for christmas from then on i had my own rack to put my guns and access to them as i wanted hunted a lot by myself for small game liveing in the country, almost all my friends were raised the same way. as for today i think each parent will have to determine when each child is old enough to have full access to his firearms , some are mature enough at 10 some are not at 20, and even then they should be locked you just can,t know how the kid yours brings home from school was taught, we can,t gave whoopins anymore without being locked up as parents
NRA all the way god guns and guts made us free , i want all three

There's was always a look but don't touch rule at the house. Could always reach them but didn't want to bc I understood that was entrapment for an extended buttwhoopin. Pretty much the same way I grew up.

Had a bb gun at 8, hunting with a .22 at 12, shotgun at 14 and rifle at 16. The law where I grew up allowed for no more than that. My son killed his first deer at 8. I love Texas.

I grew up with guns. I had some serious talks from my parents (my father's twin was killed at 14 because his friend brought his dad's gun into the house and it went off in his pocket) and uncles. I had a healthy respect for guns but they were never locked up. My parents had me compete in shooting sports in 4-H and I went through hunters ed. In high school I slept with my dad's .357 behind my bed. You have to educate your kids and be responsible about the guns in the house.

I have a 7 year old a 4 year old and one the way..(Will be her later this month). I am teaching both my girls gun safety. My 7 year old goes out shooting with me and my 4 year old "helps" me clean my guns and reload. You know I have a gun safe and use it. I will always use one. It is not my girls that I have a concern about it are their friends. It is no longer a time when “all my friends had guns”. We cannot allow fear to take our gun rights away. If we leave our guns out and a kid have a accidental discharge then that will provide the fear. O and it is the law…
