Survival of the fittest is a metaphor related to the biological theory of evolution. Well this is basically what happened tonight. For the previous 3 weeks I have had a large boar coming to one specific trap and evading me. He will eat the corn in front of the trap, in the trap, then lean over the trip wire and eat what he can. Every night I pull up he is there, filling his belly, on my dollar. Well after last night’s storm I realized it was time to end this cat and mouse game. I, East, am the dominant species and will prevail as the victor. I got off work tonight and took my time. I could feel my blood boiling but didn’t want to rush, so when the time came I would not rush my shot. Giving the previous rain the air was wet, sweat poured as I walked the half mile to the trap. As I got closer I could hear the kernels cracking. As I topped the hill and there he set, I would estimate 180-200 lbs. Not what I expected from when I had seen him in darkness, but none the less, a lesser, weaker species. I was 150 yards out and had an easy and accurate shot. But, I wanted this to be personal, I had a vendetta, and that was to listen to the air escape him before he knew he was hit. I only had one chance and that was to flank him. The rush was on. Would I make the run, before the corn ran out? After an exhausting run, I popped out of the woods at 15 yards, and to my amazement and surprise he was starring right at me. He immediately started snapping his teeth and before I knew, in a furry, he blasted off his hind legs and took off right at me. (I was standing on his trail) With instinct I started back pedaling, and with my luck stepped in a wallow and dropped my rifle in the mud. Squirming backward I started scrambling for my pistol. I felt the grip in my hands and drew as he hit wallow and sent up a splash off muddy water. I drew and fired into the splash. Silence fell upon us and the beast was dead. Was it luck? Or survival of the fittest?
