Actually the answer should be both options.

i absolutely agree. it should be both options. I voted start a young age..but you should definately keep them in a safe so kids dont touch them.

Actually as usual your post and poll lacks a mature grasp of the picture when it comes to firearm introduction to young children. The reason other members say both, is because although a parent or adult supervisor may find it best to get kids started at as early age as physically and mentally possible at a range or in the field under safe supervision, it is still the prudent thing for any shooter to have guns secured at home to keep young hands off guns when there is no one around to supervise and accidents could likely occur.

I leave them on the kitchen table loaded with the safety off, but I teach kids about firearm safety first.

There's was always a look but don't touch rule at the house. Could always reach them but didn't want to bc I understood that was entrapment for an extended buttwhoopin.

That is the way it was at my house growing up. Another aspect is the kids in a house where a gun is not locked up know and obey the rules but some friend over might not.

Both, but I picked the first one because that was how I was raised. My fathers philosophy was based on the premise that he could protect me at our house, but he would not always be there and everyone doesn't follow the same set of rules. He wanted me to respect guns and what they are capable of doing, but not fear them. By being around guns my whole life, they weren't near as fascinating when I encountered them at friends houses.

I always kept our guns put up but not locked up. My boys been shooting since they were little and we have had no issues. Both are grown now and they own more guns than I do.

Never had a pistol though. I always felt there was no need for one and because for kids the pistol is probably the most fascinating. My oldest son bought the first pistol we ever kept in the house.

As already said, this pole is silly.
Personally, I have been shooting since I could hold a rifle. Over the past few years I've been thinking how lucky I was to have had a dad that allowed me...or even encouraged me...to do "dangerous" things that most people's parents flip over. Whether it be climbing trees, hiking, camping, canoeing, or shooting, I was allowed to do it from an early age and I think I'm a better person for it even if I scraped my knees a few times.
That being said, they were always in a viably controlled environment, like the buddy-system while doing anything with a potential to become hurt outdoors, or for shooting, using a properly maintained and safe range where any participants are responsible and supervising others. All very basic things that any outdoorsman and shooter know to do for safety.
At the home I did have access to the guns, I knew how to unlock the pistol safe, and I knew how to unlock the longguns. I had access to them because of the very reason stated earlier by someone; my dad would of course not always be around when my sister or I were.

I taught my kids about guns early but also kept the guns locked up.

Poll needs to be both.

Both my boys started shooting a .22 at age 3 and at ages 9 & 13 are great marksman with a tremendous respect for the firearms in our house. That being said the firearms are all locked either in the safe or in the gun cabinet with trigger locks on them. That's just being responsible.

Another topic is airsoft guns. What chump decided to make realistic guns that you shoot at other people? Honestly they need to be banned. Let's teach responsibility, not stupidity.

I think this shows where I stand on the topic.

My daughter is only 4 but has a major respect for guns. She always asks if a gun is unloaded if it's out of the safe. Even so, she can not touch a gun (loaded or unloaded) without supervision. I usually make sure all guns are unloaded before entering the house. I do keep a loaded magazine up on a shelf that I can just pop in if needed for protection. She helps her daddy clean the guns after use & she even helped him sand down a stock & re-stain it the other day. He named off the parts as they re-assembled it so she will be knowledgeable about it. She shots a little .22 with supervision & will be getting her 1st gun in December when she turns 5. She has been told that it will be put in the gun cabinet with the rest when we get home from the deer lease.
When other kids enter our home, family or friends, they are told the rules. The gun cabinet is locked & the door to my husband's hunting room is locked. They are not even allowed to look. Not everyone has the same views that we do.
