I have been re painting some decoys this past month. I started with this wooden decoy that I bought that was unfinished.

before

paint is still wet here, sprayed it with flat clear later

after painting that one I decided to repaint some of my old flambeaus. I repainted some of them and then realized I didn't need a bunch of old Flambeau mallards so I attempted to turn them into gray ducks.

first attempt on an old 1st generation Flam

did several of these 2nd generations

here are a couple later model Flams, I've somehow accumulated about 8 dozen of these dang things that never get used, maybe I will get some use out of them now.

Very nice! The second one is the best. What base color grey did you use?

I like that you didn't try to put too much detail. Looks the best on a working decoy.

The heads look good. Need more white on the wing bar for flash and bring the black all the way back on the tails

the base coat on the 2nd and 3rd gray duck pics is krylon gray primer. Then I used acrylic paint and finished with a flat clear coat.

I posted this back in January but I turned a dozen of these Game Winner closeouts from Academy for $6 a dozen into bluebills:

Since season ended I have been working on carving gadwall decoys. I have 7 drakes carved that I need to paint after I finish water testing something, so in the meantime I took some old decoys I got from FowlDreams and tried to practice a gadwall paint job on them.

I want to do the same over the summer. Those all look great to me, nice work. How well does the paint stick to a plastic surface? Can it take being carried around with 23 other decoys in a big bag?

those look good Dave.

jeepthing I take a wire brush to the decoys then wipe them down with paint thinner. Plastic decoys need to be rubbed with paint thinner or alcohol to remove the oils and mold release that is on the plastic. (I read that somewhere)

$10 worth of paint and brushes and a couple of easy hours worth of work during which we can mostly be drinking scotch.

Your not bringing those scotch induced painted dekes to the lease now are you? Maybe they like hybrid ducks.

If it looks anything like a can when your done, we will see. The last time I gave you dekes to paint they turned into coots.
