Hey Guys
Zale and I got to our new hog hunting spot Sat. night about 4:45pm
Soon as I got there - I set the feeder to go off for 5 sec. every hour and pour out some "strawberry soda" around the feeder.
5:00 feeder goes off and we are settled quite in the blind - right off a coon (with a nasty open wound on his back) comes in and starts eating..
about 6:30 a small pig comes up to the edge of the clearing and works it's way around the clearing never coming out in the opening just behind the edge of the brush - finally he started to step out into the open
Zale sits forward in his chair - which gave off a loud SQUEAK!
Zip he was gone - we started messing with our chairs which seemed pretty quite before - but now realized pretty quite - so not quite enough when hunting...
Then Zale said he can't see the area in front of the feeder without standing up - the bottom edge of the window is too high... This blind was Ok when it was on the ground - but now 5 feet in the air and now Zale is sitting too low the see up and over the bottom edge of the window and down in front of the blind...
Plus - our feet are make too much noise on the floor boards...
So making mental notes about possible changes and we sit watching the coon and birds - nice breeze in our face - very nice evening..
about 8:45 (getting dark) a big pig comes into the clearing - then around to to the left and behind some trees
I alert Zale who didn't see him and signal him to be still - the hog walks toward the left side of the feeder - I lift my rifle and put the red dot on his heart - shoot - the hog freezes and then zip he is off into the brush...
I guess I missed - don't see how from 40 yards
We sat quite for another hour nothing....
we had the feeder lights on and green light on which worked very well
Finally Zale wanted to shoot a coon - so I said ok (good test of his scope in the green light....)
Just as he was going to shoot the feeder went off and zip went the coon into the brush...
Ok first hog hunt - we learned a lot
1) Need quite chairs 2) Zale need's taller chair 3) Need carpet scrap for under our feet 4) Let Zale shoot - I cant hit the broadside of a barn
It was fun - and we will get them next time
Thanks Guys
Chris-Chris

"the hog freezes and..."
sounds to me like you hit it. probably just took him a minute to figure out he was dead

lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

Well Guys
I debated in my mind - the merit of going into the brush looking for it - before it got too dark - but it's just me and a 11 y/o
I figured not worth it...
We be back soon to make changes - will look for it during the day - coyotes will leave some bones - I hope...
not giving up on my .303 yet...

if it is warm out I always take my boots off in the blind. If I have to get out to stalk it is quiet and perfect pace in socks.

i am glad ya'll got some hog action on your first set. sounds like it will be a good set up once you get the bugs works out. stick that 303 in his ear hole and he will go down but just be ready for a second shot if you are off your mark a bit.
don't worry, my boy shoots better than me too.

Head shots (or neck shots) are okay if you're close and confident of making a good shot. I've killed a number of hogs with a .303 including one that was in the 220 Lb range. I usually shoot for the shoulder, low and forward. They don't always drop on the spot, but they don't go far. This one was quartering away so I shot him just behind the right shoulder. I suspect I hit the spine because he fell right away.
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Great story. I think most if not all of us have had trips like that.
