I donot think Herters has done rifles in years. Have one of the J9s in 264Win Mag.

I think Herters is now part of Cabela's. If I remember correctly it closed, maybe bankruptcy in the 1980's. Then Cabela's bought some of the name.

I didn't know Cabela's had anything to do with them - i just remember them from the late 60s early 70s - [when i was young] they covered everything - more than Cabela's today or that is how i remember them - i always had an intrest in the rifles and have never seen or held one - how did they shoot?

The J9 is nothing special really, comercial Mauser action, in the original wood stock with the plastic butt plate it kicked like a mule. Since have put it in a synthetic stock with an ok recoil pad and added a timmney trigger. Best groups I got it shooting with handloads is a little over an inch if memory is correct. Haven't shot it in probally 13 years

Hey Kmon 1 - in 1974 your rifle sold for 112.95 to 144.70 - kind of like buying gas when i was 16 during the gas wars

I remember getting Herter's catalogs in 1995. Bought several BP guns from them right after I got married (1995). About that time Cabela's bought the rights to their mail order catalogs and they no longer had a mail order system. Not sure what happened after that. They had a great catalog.

I have three shotguns with the Herters chokes installed, all back in the late 40's. Seems the chokes still perform as designed.

Understand about the name of the gun. I have a few others that are interesting named ones to me, like Mannlicher. For the 264 I might break it out sometime again or sell it not sure right now.

If I remember correctly, Herters catalog business was bought by Gander Mountain back in the early/mid 90's

DEJA VU....
We were just talking about Herter's while we were shooting last Friday.
Back in the day, Herter's was the Schnizit and I spent many a day wearing out the pages of their catalog.
I spent a few hundred dollars on fly tying supplies from them.

Still have the tools from my Herter's Master Fly Tying Kit.

Cheers,
